By studying a group of 136 patients diagnosed with and treated for carcinoma of the penis at the Clinic of Urology in Prague, the authors were able to evaluable existing knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment of tumorous diseases of the penis. The anatomy of the penis, pathological anatomy of particular tumour types, the epidemiology of these diseases, and the diagnostic techniques are described. In there section devoted to treatment, surgical treatment techniques, radiation therapy and management by cytostatics are discussed. Special attention is given to the treatment of regional lymph nodes. Most appropriate therapeutic techniques for the particular types of tumor are recommended in the conclusion.
Tumorous diseases of the penis are relatively rare and comprise only about 0,5 % of all malignant tumours in developed countries. In contrast, they are more common in some areas of Africa, Asia and South America. Even though it is an easily recognisable disease, the patients often do not consult a physician before it has spread to an almost unbeliveable extent. The loss of the organ altered by the tumour substantially affects a patient's private life, which is retry tumorous disease of the penis represents not only a significant medical problem but also a social one. Be cause there is no synoptic work available on this issue, and because the condition is often treated by general practitioners, different treatment techniques are used.
