The Basics of MTUSpeed

Information is transmitted across the Internet as packets. Each node on the Internet is setup to use a certain size of packet when sending and receiving. The default Windows 95 and Windows NT packet size (MTU) is 1500 bytes which is actually the default for an Ethernet network and not the Internet (which has a "standard" of 576 bytes).

Although 576 is the Internet "standard" many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use an MTU other than 576 (my ISP uses 1500, some use 512 and some use different values). The aim of MTUSpeed is to allow you to set the MTU to a value that will permit you to get the best out of your connection.

Hint: You can right click on the program window to get HTML Help. If you installed MTUSpeed from an exectuable, and weren't passed a couple of files by a friend, the HTML Help will be stored on your hard disk so that you can access it without connecting to the internet.
