CloneCD 4 Main Window |
 |
The following Main Window opens when you start CloneCD.
Here you can already see the four main functions of CloneCD: The pictures say
more than words: Reading, Writing, Copying and Deleting.
Read CD to Image File
Write CD from Image File
Copy from CD to CD
Erase a CD-RW
Simply click on one of the buttons above to get further information.
Additionally, the Main Window contains three Menu
Items: File, Tools and Help. These menus allow you to change settings and
reach the Help Manual.
Note: If you don't have any CD Readers and/or CD Writers installed, the
corresponding Buttons are disabled.
Read Button: Read from a Source CD, create an Image File
With the Read Button you can read from a Source CD and create an Image File.
You will need this image file later on to write to CD-R Media.
Press the Read Button now.
First Window
On the left-hand side you'll find your CD Readers and CD Writers, on the right-hand
side you'll find the device capabilities. Choose a CD Reader. Clicking the right
mouse button opens a context menu - please select "Eject" and insert
your Source CD into the drive.
Important: Please let CloneCD close the drive tray for you! This way CloneCD
gets to access the drive before the operating system does.
Hint: If you only have one CD Reader, insert the Source CD and leave the tray
open (!). Click on the Read Button next - the tray closes automatically and
CloneCD advances to the next window.
Double-click on the selected CD Reader or click on "Next" to close
the CD Reader's tray.
Second Window
On the right-hand side you'll find the details your CD Reader discovered about
the inserted CD.
Turning to the left, you'll find the CloneCD Profiles.
Profiles are preset Read- and Write-Settings that match particular CD types: an
Audio CD needs different settings from a Game- or Data-CD. Simply pick a Profile
that fits your Source CD.
Double-clicking a Profile or clicking on "Next" takes you to the
next window.
Third Window
Here you can define where CloneCD should save the to-be-created Image File.
Click on "Browse..." to select an existing folder or create a new
one. CloneCD
will memorize the folder until the next time you want create an image.
Hint: If you're using CloneCD for the first time, create a folder on your
local drive, for example "CD Images". Assign useful names to your
Image Files, so that you'll be able to tell the difference at a later point in
time. Do not keep too many Image-Files, the space on your local drive is
limited.
You have the option to select the checkbox "Create Cue-Sheet": If
this checkbox is enabled, a so-called "Cue-Sheet" will be created for
you. This file can be used with other applications to process the Image File
created by CloneCD. Creating a "Cue-Sheet" is not possible if the
Source CD contains more than one session!
Click on "OK". The reading process begins.
In the Main Window and the Log Window you'll see the
reading progress. Once the reading is finished, you'll hear a jingle and a small
window pops up.
Confirm with OK. The Image File was saved to your local drive.
The Menu Item "Read to File..." has the
same function as the Read Button.
The Read Button is disabled (marked as grey) if no CD Reader was found.
Write Button: Copy from Image File to CD-Reader
With the Write Button you can write an Image File to CD-R Media.
Press the Write Button now.
First Window
On the left-hand side CloneCD shows the address of the Image File created the
last time. On the right-hand side you'll find the matching properties. If you
agree with the choice of the Image File click on "Next". If not, click
on "Browse", choose an Image File from your folder and click on
"Next" now.
You have the option to select the checkbox "Delete after successful
Write". If this checkbox is enabled, the Image File will be deleted after a
successful Write. It will not be deleted if the Write was aborted, an error occurred
or a Write Simulation was done.
Second Window
Analog to the Reading process you'll find your CD Readers and CD Writers on the left-hand
side and on the right the device capabilities. Choose a CD Writer. Clicking the
right mouse button opens a context menu - please select "Eject" and
insert your CD-R Media into the drive. Double-click on the selected CD Writer or
click on "Next" to close the CD Writer's tray.
Third Window
Also for the writing process you'll find CloneCD Profiles.
CloneCD remembers the Profile chosen for the Reading process and does suggest it
while marking the Profile as grey. If you do not agree with the suggested Profile,
please choose the right one.
Above that you can specify the Write Speed which is going to be used. Max
means the maximum speed your CD Writer supports. Before setting a high speed,
you should try a simulated write to check if your computer is fast enough to
supply the CD Writer with data.
You have the option to select the checkbox "Simulate writing". If
this checkbox is enabled, CloneCD will perform a simulated write. With a
simulated write you can check if your computer is can fast enough supply the CD
Writer with data without risking to destroy a medium. For the simulation to work
an empty Disc has to be inserted but no data will be actually written. Please
note that not all CD Writers will support this.
If you agree with all setting please click on "OK". The writing
process begins.
In the Main Window and the Log Window you'll see the
writing progress. Once the writing is finished, you'll hear a jingle and a small
window pops up.
Confirm with OK. The Image File was written to your CD-R Media.
The Menu Item "Write from File..." has
the same function as the Write Button.
The Write Button is disabled (marked as grey) if no CD Writer was found.

Copy Button: Copy from a CD-Reader to CD-Writer
With the Copy Button you can combine the reading and the writing process.
This copy function is especially useful for a single copying process. You have
the opportunity to copy directly from the the Source CD to the CD-R Media. You
can even choose if you save the Image File on your local harddrive or not.
Press the Copy Button now.
Recommended for using this copy function is, that your CD Reader and CD Writer are not connected at the same IDE cable
and DMA (Direct Memory Access) should be activated and supported by your CD-Drives. Your OS should
be Windows 98se / ME / NT / 2000 or XP.
Windows 95A users should not use this feature.
Double-click on the selected CD Reader or click on "Next" to close
the CD Reader's tray.
Second Window

next window.
Third Window
Here you can define where CloneCD should save the to-be-created Image File.

local drive, for example "CD Images". Assign useful names to your
Image Files, so that you'll be able to tell the difference at a later point in
time. Do not keep too many Image-Files, the space on your local drive is
limited.
This window shows the first difference to the pure Read Function (see above).
Here you have the option to copy directly from the the Source CD to the CD-R
Media without needing a buffer store. If you wish to do so, enable the checkbox
"Copy "On the Fly"" for this function. If you only want to
copy directly (i.e. you want to copy an Audio CD), but you want to save the
Image File on the local harddrive then choose an Image File and an address using
the "Browse Button" and click on "Next".
Above that you have the option to select the checkbox "Create
Cue-Sheet" and "Simulate writing". Please see above for further
information. If you have chosen the "On the fly" function, the two
checkboxes are disabled.
Now the preparation for the reading process is finalized. In the next window
the preparation for the writing process will begin.
Fourth Window
Analog to the Reading process you'll find your CD Readers and CD Writers on the left-hand
side and on the right the device capabilities. Choose a CD Writer. Clicking the
right mouse button opens a context menu - please select "Eject" and
insert your CD-R Media into the drive. Double-click on the selected CD Writer or
click on "Next" to close the CD Writer's tray. If you do have only one
CD Writer, CloneCD will directly proceed to the next window.
Fifth Window
Also for the writing process you'll find CloneCD Profiles.
CloneCD remembers the Profile chosen for the Reading process and does suggest it
while marking the Profile as grey. If you do not agree with the suggested Profile,
please choose the right one.
Above that you can specify the Write Speed which is going to be used. Max
means the maximum speed your CD Writer supports. Before setting a high speed,
you should try a simulated write to check if your computer is fast enough to
supply the CD Writer with data.

this checkbox is enabled, CloneCD will perform a simulated write. With a
simulated write you can check if your computer is can fast enough supply the CD
Writer with data without risking to destroy a medium. For the simulation to work
an empty Disc has to be inserted but no data will be actually written. Please
note that not all CD Writers will support this.
If you agree with all setting please click on "OK". The copying
process begins.
In the Main Window and the Log Window you'll see the
copying progress. Once the copying is finished, you'll hear a jingle and a small
window pops up.
Confirm with OK. The Image File was written to your CD-R Media.
The Menu Item "Copy CD..." has the same
function as the Copy Button.
The Copy Button is disabled (marked as grey) if no CD Writer was found.
Erase Button: Erase a CD-RW Media
With the Erase Button you can delete a CD-RW Media.
Press the Erase Button now.
First Window
On the left-hand side you'll find your CD Writers, on the right-hand side you'll find the
device capabilities. Choose a CD Writer. Clicking the right mouse button opens a
context menu - please select "Eject" and insert your CD-RW Media
into the drive.
Hint: If you only have one CD Writer, insert the CD-RW Media and leave the
tray open (!). Click on the Erase Button next - the tray closes automatically
and CloneCD advances to the next window.
Second Window
On the left-hand side you'll find the chosen CD Writer, on the right-hand side
the properties of the CD-RW Media.
You have the option to select the checkbox "Fast Erase". If this
checkbox is enabled, CloneCD will do a fast erase of the CD-RW Media. A fast
erase will take about two minutes and will only erase the Table of Contents of
the Disk. A normal erase erases the whole Disk and will take much longer. If the
erased CD-RW Media is going to be used with CloneCD, a fast erase is sufficient.
If the CD will be used with Packet Writing Software, you should do a full erase.
If you agree with all setting please click on "OK". The erasing
process begins.
In the Main Window and the Log Window you'll see the
erasing progress. Once the erasing is finished, you'll hear a jingle and a small
window pops up.
Confirm with OK. The CD-RW Media has been deleted.
The Menu Item "Erase CD..." has the same
function as the Erase Button.
The Erase Button is disabled (marked as grey) if no CD Writer was found.
