Error 1303: Microsoft Money [year]  cannot be installed to the selected drive.

Complete message: Error 1303: Microsoft Money [year] cannot be installed to the selected drive. Type or select another drive such as C or D.

This message can indicate that your computer does not permit files to be copied to certain directories. To resolve the issue, adjust the permissions for the folders that Money uses:

Adjust Permissions on System Folders
Note  Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  2. Select one of the folders listed above.
  3. Right-click the folder, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  4. On the Security tab, click Permissions.
  5. Select the Everyone group, and then click Full Control in the Type of Access list.
  6. Select the Replace Permissions on Subdirectories check box.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Yes to the prompt confirming whether you want to replace permissions on all subdirectories.
  9. Click OK in the folder name Properties dialog box (where folder name is the name of the folder that you selected in step 2).

After you complete these steps, re-install Money.

OR

Error 1308: Source file not found: [file name].

Complete message: Error 1308: Error reading from file: [file name]. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

These messages can indicate that there is a conflict with the Microsoft Windows Installer utility. To fix the conflict, use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. This utility allows you to safely remove Windows Installer settings from your computer in the event of a problem.

Run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
  1. Hold down SHIFT and insert the Money CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. (The SHIFT key prevents Setup from running automatically.)
  2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  3. Double-click the drive that contains the Money CD-ROM.
  4. In the list, double-click the PSS folder.
  5. Double-click the msicuu.exe file, and follow the instructions on the screen.

Error 1309: Error reading from file: [path]

Complete message: Error 1309: Error reading from file: [path]. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

This message can indicate that a set of files your computer needs (the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), version 2.5 or later) is missing or damaged. To resolve this issue, manually run the Mdac_typ.exe file, and then install Microsoft Money.

Manually run Mdac_typ.exe and install Money

Note  Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Hold down the SHIFT key and insert the Money CD into the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive. The SHIFT key prevents the program from running automatically.
  2. Click Start, click Search, and search the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive for the file mdac_typ.exe.
  3. Double-click the Mdac_typ.exe file.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the MDAC 2.5 (or later) Update.
  5. Restart the computer when you are prompted to do so.
  6. After the MDAC Update is complete, install Money.

Error 1311: Source file not found: [file name].cab.

Complete message: Error 1311: Source file not found: [file name].cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

OR

Error 1335: The cabinet file [file name].cab required for this installation…

Complete message: Error 1335: The cabinet file [file name].cab required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.

These messages can indicate that programs that your computer runs automatically are interfering with Money installation. If you receive either of these messages, try copying the Money installation files on your hard disk, re-starting your computer without the automatic programs, and re-installing Money from the copied files.

Copy the Contents of the CD-ROM to Your Hard Disk
  1. Right-click the desktop, point to New on the shortcut menu, and then click Folder.
  2. Type a name for your folder, such as MoneyCD, and then press ENTER.
  3. Hold down SHIFT and insert the Money CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. (The SHIFT key prevents Setup from running automatically.)
  4. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  5. Right-click your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click Explore on the shortcut menu.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  8. Right-click the folder that you created in step 2, and then click Paste on the shortcut menu.
Set Up Your Computer So That It Doesn't Run Automatic Programs (Windows XP)

If you aren't using Windows 98 or Windows XP, review the information at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q290/1/06.asp (Knowledge Base article 290106 on the Microsoft Product Support Services Web site, http://support.microsoft.com).

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig.exe, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective startup, and then click to clear the Load startup group items check box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.
    Note  To restore the normal startup configuration for your computer after Money is successfully installed, repeat these steps, but click Normal startup in step 3.
Install Money from the Folder on Your Desktop
  1. Double-click the folder you created earlier that contains the contents of your Money CD-ROM.
  2. Double-click the Setup.exe file to start Windows Installer and Money Setup.
  3. Complete Setup by following the instructions on the screen.
  4. Restart your computer after Setup is complete.
  5. Verify that Money opens successfully.
  6. Delete the folder on your desktop that contains the contents of the Money CD-ROM.

Error 1402: Could not open key [key name].

Complete message: Error 1402: Could not open key [key name]. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

This message can indicate that certain files or folders (called registry entries) on your computer contain incorrect, invalid, or corrupted information, perhaps because they were previously moved or renamed on your hard disk. To resolve this issue, use the Windows Registry Checker Tool to scan, detect, and repair damage in the system registry, and, if necessary, restore a backup of the registry.

Use the Windows Registry Checker Tool for Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

If you aren't using Windows 98, review the information at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q303/0/89.asp (Knowledge Base article 303089 on the Microsoft Product Support Services Web site, http://support.microsoft.com).

  1. Restart your computer. Press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then select Command prompt only.
  2. At the command prompt, type scanreg /fix and then press ENTER. Be sure to enter a space before the slash (/).
  3. After the Registry Checker tool completes repairing the registry, press ENTER.
  4. At the command prompt, type scanreg /opt and then press ENTER. Be sure to enter a space before the slash (/).
    Note  The /opt command-line switch causes the Registry Checker tool to optimize the registry by removing unused space.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Insert the Money CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive and run Setup.

Error 1911: Could not register type library.

Complete message: Error 1911: Could not register type library. Contact your support personnel.

This message can indicate that certain Money files (with the extension .ocx) have been damaged. To resolve the issue, rename the files and reinstall Money.

Rename the Corrupted Files and Reinstall Money
Note  Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. Click All Files and Folders.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type inv*.ocx.
  4. In the Look in list, click Local Hard Drives (C:) under My Computer, and then click Search.
    Npte  If you installed Money to a different drive, click the appropriate location.
  5. When the search process is complete, right-click any file that is found, and then click Rename.
  6. Rename the file and give it the extension .old.
  7. If you are prompted to confirm, click Yes.
  8. If the search finds more than one file, repeat steps 5 through 7 to rename each file that appears.
  9. Insert the Money CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  10. If the Money installation program starts automatically, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
    If the Money installation program does not start automatically, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
    3. Click Add New Programs.
    4. Click CD or Floppy.
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

Error 2351: File key [name] not found in cabinet [name].

Complete message: Error 2351: File key [name] not found in cabinet [name]. The installation cannot continue.

OR

Error 2355: Money Setup has been interrupted.

Complete message: Error 2355: Money Setup has been interrupted. This may be caused by a corrupted disc or by a problem with your CD drive. Make sure that you haven't inadvertently opened your CD drive.

These messages can indicate that the Windows Installer software encounters a problem when it extracts files from a compressed file located on a CD-ROM. You can resolve this problem by running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

Run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
  1. Hold down SHIFT and insert the Money CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. (The SHIFT key prevents Setup from running automatically.)
  2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  3. Double-click the drive that contains the Money CD-ROM.
  4. Double-click the PSS folder.
  5. Double-click the msicuu.exe file, and follow the instructions on the screen.

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM…

Complete message: The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable media that is not available. Please insert the Money [year] CD.

This message can indicate that an earlier version of Microsoft Money was installed on your computer, and has not been removed completely. To resolve the problem, use the following steps to remove the files.

Part 1: Log On as Administrator and Remove Money Files (Windows 2000, Windows XP)

Note  Before you perform the following procedure, make sure you back up any Microsoft Money files that you want to save.

  1. Log on to the computer as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Money [year], and then click Remove.
  5. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Money [year] System Pack, and then click Remove.
  6. Start Windows Explorer, and then browse to the following folders, where C is the drive on which Windows is installed:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Money
    Note  The location of these folders may be different on your computer if you installed Microsoft Money to a location on your hard disk other than the default location.
  7. Right-click each folder, and then click Delete.
  8. Log off the computer as Administrator.
  9. Proceed to Part 2, below.
Part 2: Log On as Another User and Confirm Money Files Have Been Removed
  1. Log on to the computer with another user account.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Make sure that Microsoft Money [year] is not displayed in the Currently installed programs list. If there is an entry for Microsoft Money [year], click Microsoft Money [year], and then click Remove.
  5. Log off the computer.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 5, above, for each user account on the computer.
    Note  If you cannot remove a Microsoft Money [year] entry from the Currently installed programs list in Add or Remove Programs, you may need to install and run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Learn more about about the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Part 3: Log On and Install Money
  1. Log on to the computer as Administrator.
  2. Insert the Money 2004 CD into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and follow the instructions.

This installation package could not be opened.

This message can indicate that your computer has a faulty installation of the Windows Installer. To resolve the issue, install the Microsoft Money System Pack (Syspack.msi) from the Money CD-ROM, and then install Money.

Install Syspack.msi from the Money CD-ROM
  1. Hold down the SHIFT key and insert the Money 2004 CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. The SHIFT key prevents the installation process from running automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type drive:\syspack.msi, where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions to complete the installation process.
Use Setup.exe to Install Money
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type drive:\setup.exe, where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the installation process.

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.

Complete message: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This may occur if you are running in Safe Mode, or the Windows Installer may be installed incorrectly.

This message can indicate that the Windows Installer file is corrupted. To resolve this issue, reinstall the Windows Installer file from the Money CD-ROM.

Reinstall the Windows Installer
  1. Hold down the SHIFT key and insert the Money CD into the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive. The SHIFT key prevents the program from running automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  3. Double-click the drive that contains the Money CD-ROM.
  4. In the root folder of the CD-ROM, double-click the instmsia.exe file. If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, double click instmsiu.exe instead.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation process.

Setup is unable to register tasks.

Add Administrative Permissions (Windows XP)
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft

  4. Right-click the Money subkey, and then click Permissions.
  5. In the Group or user names list, click Administrators, and then click Add.
  6. Select the Allow check box in the Full Control row.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  8. Restart your computer.

There is another copy of Microsoft Money on this computer.

Complete text: There is another copy of Microsoft Money on this computer. Before you can install a new copy of Money, you must uninstall the old copy. To uninstall Money, use the Add/Remove program feature in the Control Panel.

This message can indicate that a trial version of Money was not completely removed before you upgraded to the retail version of Money. To resolve the problem, remove the remaining Money files and reinstall the retail version.

Remove the Trial Version of Money
Note  Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Money Trial, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the trial version.
Install the Retail Version of Money

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Add New Programs.
  4. Click CD or Floppy.
