Every e-mail message received can contain a virus, even if there is no attachment symbol accompanying it (the typical paperclip). Furthermore, it is not necessary to run the attachment to become infected; on some systems, it will be enough to open the message or simply view it through the Preview option to trigger the infection.
The best way to avoid infections is to verify all unsolicited e-mail messages or those messages received from non-habitual sources. A hint of virus presence is the existence in the message body of words written in a language different from that of the sender's.
