Getting started with e-mail

Opera comes with a built-in e-mail client, with the essential functionality needed to send, receive and organize e-mail.

Creating an e-mail account

There are two ways of creating an e-mail account in Opera.

Importing e-mail from another e-mail client

To import e-mail from another e-mail client, select Import under File.

  1. Choose which e-mail client to import e-mail from
  2. If the path to the e-mail client is incorrect, click to locate the correct folder
  3. Choose whether to...
    1. import all available information from the e-mail client into a fresh new Opera account
    2. import and merge with an existing Opera account. In this case, decide...
      1. whether also to import your settings and contacts
      2. what account to merge into
  4. When the import process is completed, you are ready to use the e-mail client

Setting up an e-mail account from scratch

Before setting up an e-mail account in Opera, make sure you have an operational e-mail account with your Internet Service Provider or System Administrator.

The following information is required...

To create an e-mail account in Opera, select New account under E-mail on the main menu.

In the dialog that appears, fill in the fields like this example...

When done, click the "Servers" tab, and fill in the fields like this example...

Your essential e-mail account setup is now complete. If you later want to fine-tune your e-mail account, click the Incoming, Outgoing and Warnings tabs.

Using the e-mail client

The e-mail client is operated both from the E-mail menu on the main menu bar, and from the Hotlist (press Ctrl+Alt+M).

Checking your e-mail

To check your e-mail, click in the Hotlist.

Writing e-mail

To write an e-mail to someone, click in the Hotlist. Write the e-mail, then click in the compose window to send it.

To write e-mail in your own language, select Edit active account from the E-mail menu, click the "Outgoing" tab, then select the appropriate encoding for your written language.

Queueing e-mail

If you have a non-permanent Internet connection, such as dial-up, you can queue e-mail to send in a batch when you go on-line.

To enable queueing, select Edit active account from the E-mail menu, click the "Outgoing" tab, then check the option about queueing of e-mail.

Write e-mail as normal. Then, when you go on-line, click in the Hotlist to send all your queued e-mail.
