At first glance the PC world seems packed with backup tools, but take a closer look and you'll find most of these aren't as they seem. Annoying restrictions are common (free versions of commercial utilities that can't back up to a network drive, say), and very few programs seem to have the flexibility to deal with real life situations. But don't let such problems put you off trying out Genie Backup Manager 5.0 Professional, because this tool is very, very different.

There's no shortage of possible backup destinations here, for instance. The program can save to internal, external or local hard drives, USB memory sticks, or removable media devices. It'll write to CDs or DVDs with support for multi-disc spanning, and even upload to remote FTP servers.

Genie Backup Manager uses a backup profile system that makes it particularly easy to save common system files (Registry, Favourites, email, Windows address book and more). Just click a check box next to the item you want to back up. But its powerful XML-based scripting environments give you power and flexibility, too.

Whatever you choose can be saved as a normal, incremental or mirror backup type, then optionally compressed with ZIP password or AES encryption security. You can also create a self-executable backup set, which can restored on any PC, whether it has Genie Backup Manager Professional installed or not.

And the list goes on, with useful features appearing everywhere you look: a scheduler to let you run unattended backups, data integrity testing to confirm that your backup can be reliably restored, email notification of the status of a backup job, and more. If you're not entirely happy with your current backup tool, this must be worth a look.

Move to version 8.0 of Genie Backup Manager Professional and you'll discover extras like the new Disaster Recovery tool, providing a bootable graphical environment to help restore a corrupted hard drive and get your PC booting again. There's support for many new applications (Outlook 2007, Windows Mail), the program now backs up files even if they're currently open or locked, and a new compression engine ensures your backup files are smaller than ever. The list price is around £35, but you can upgrade for around £27, a 25% discount. Just follow the link in your registration email to order.
