BitDefender has always been known for its fast, reliable antivirus engine, but with tough competition from other vendors that's not enough on its own. And so version 9 sees the company introducing several other interesting new features, in the hope you'll be persuaded to give the program a try.
One major plus point sees infected files scanned and treated as they're accessed, rather than just afterwards. This means there's a good chance that infected documents can be properly recovered, instead of being deleted.
BitDefender 9 also includes the new Heuristics in Virtual Environment (HiVE) technology. Apart from having a cool name, it also creates a virtual PC to test software for potential malware behaviour. This may allow the program to detect threats that haven't been discovered yet, and without putting your system at any risk.
A new BitDefender Event logger records details about infected and suspect objects. And email protection is now more convenient, with BitDefender running at the POP3 and SMTP protocol levels. This should allow threats to be detected regardless of the email client used, although curiously the Readme.txt file explains this doesn't work with Lotus Notes.
What we didn't expect to see was any improvement in update frequency, because BitDefender 8 already checked for new virus signatures every three hours. It seems that's no longer regarded as good enough, though, and version 9 sees the program move to updates every hour. If attacked directly the program can even repair itself, downloading missing or damaged files, and continuing the fight against the malware menace.
