Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 Beta 2 Known Issues
This page lists some of the known issues of Microsoft® Internet Explorer 3.0 Beta 2.
- Download the Code Signing Update: You may have noticed that IE3 always presents the "Windows Software Security" dialog box when you access a web page that contains code to download, even though this code may have been properly signed by software publishers. Going to http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie3/codesign.htm automatically activates the code signing capability of Internet Explorer so that it properly recognizes the authenticity of signed code.
- Toolbar issue in applications: IE 3.0 Beta 2 installs a new version of a Windows system file that some applications use to draw and control toolbars. The new IE 3.0 file causes "dockable" toolbars to stop working in some applications, including the ActiveX Control Pad, Wordpad, Paintbrush, and several other applications. We have identified and fixed the source of this problem for the next release of IE 3.0
- Upgrade removes customized pages and cache: After upgrading to Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 Beta 2, the customized web pages (i.e., the Microsoft Network Web page MSN) and files that are stored in the cache are removed. This is because the cache structure had to changed requiring the deletion and recreation of these directories.
- Scripting Issues: The following are some known issues with scripting in this release of Internet Explorer 3.0:
Not Implemented
- form.submit() and onSubmit
- most features new in netscape navigator 3.0 betas
- defaultSelected and value properties of options arrays - option arrays are implemented though
Known Issues
- pointer is wrong in some cases - most common symptom of this bug is a runtime error stating "'ThisOrSomeObject'is not an object"
- runtime error when any object model, method, or property is set to null
- window.open with only one parameter causes a runtime error
- escaped quotes in script (") will cause compiler error
- history.length and go(n) currently only goes one page in either direction
- document.write has problems generating html comments <!--
- document.write() must be followed by a document.close() when writing a new page
- document.write() won't append to an existing page that has been loaded
- runtime error and compiler error messages line numbers are relative to the script block, not the page
- setting location= will fail, but window.location= and location.href= will both work
- document.lastModified always returns the current time
- you can't set a frame's src=javascript:
- multiple html comments in a script block can cause a compiler error
We will continue to post more information on these issues as it becomes available.
- Background bitmap can not be turned on: The option to turn on the Background bitmap in View - Options, checking Background bitmap in the Toolbars section doesn't work. The check appears to accept it, however checking back at a later time the check mark is removed. We are working on these issues and will post new information here as it becomes available.
- Truncated shortcuts in Favorites subfolders: Favorites subfolders with a large number of shortcuts will be truncated. To work around this, select the Organize Favorites option to access these shortcuts.
- Edit/Copy/Paste doesn't work in Address field: When selecting a Universal Resource Locator (URL) from the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 Beta 2 and then selecting Edit/Copy/Paste, the Copy option is greyed out and the Paste does nothing. To workaround this, use the secondary mouse button (right for Right handed mice) and select the option there. We are working on these issues and will post new information here as it becomes available.
- NT 4.0 Issues: If you install Internet Explorer 3.0 Beta 1 on NT 4.0 Beta and were previously using an earlier version of Internet Explorer, your start page and favorites may not be transferred over correctly. To work around this, simply set the new home page using View | Options | Start and Search Pages and transfer your favorites by dragging and dropping into the new folder.
- <MARQUEE> Tags: Some combinations of tags (such as <MARQUEE><BLINK><B> Test </B></BLINK></MARQUEE>) do not display correctly in Internet Explorer 3.0 Beta 1. To workaround this issue, re-order the tags so that <MARQUEE> is the innermost tag (i.e. <BLINK><B><MARQUEE> Test </MARQUEE></B></BLINK>).
- Refresh and Frames: When you click the Refresh button while viewing a page that contains frames, the page will revert to the original page. To refresh the contents of a given frame, right-click inside the frame then choose Refresh.
- ActiveX Gallery: Some of the ActiveX Controls in the ActiveX Gallery do not work in Visual Basic Script with this release. This will be fixed.
- Site Login Issues: Some WWW sites require 'logging in', or providing a username and password, to gain admittance. Microsoft is aware that at certain sites this procedure may not work correctly in this release of Internet Explorer. We are working on these issues and will post new information here as it becomes available.
- 'Mail and News' and 'Viewers' choices are not enabled: â•– On the 'Programs' tab under View/Options the 'Mail and News' and 'Viewers' choices are not enabled in the beta, even if Mail and News are installed. Look for this functionality in a later release.
