About Canyon Software

Canyon Software is a fast growing software company started by Dan Baumbach back in 1988. The program that launched Canyon was a DOS shell and hard disk menu program, called Hard Disk Director, that is still available today. The current version is as powerful as any other file management software out there.

Dan received a bachelor's degree in Psychology and has done everything from photographing fashion models to driving a taxi in New York City. He first started working with PCs about eight years ago. Dan says he "quickly got hooked and started writing programs to make computers easier to use. That's how Hard Disk Director was born."

In Dan's quest to make Windows a more friendly place to work, he created Drag And Zip, which adds a drag and drop Windows interface to PKZIP and PKUNZIP. He later wrote a third program called Drag And View, which adds file viewing to Windows File Manager. There are a couple of high-end programs that allows users to view files in Windows, but none are as well integrated into the Windows File Manager or as small and fast as Drag And View. Drag And View was given a Shareware Industry Award as the "Best New Utility" at the Summer Shareware Seminar in Indianapolis in 1993.

Dan lives with his wife of ten years and loves being married. They have no children, but do have three cats. Nestled in Marin County north of San Francisco, Dan chose Marin as the home of Canyon software because the climate is so good and there are lots of animals in the beautiful surrounding countryside. A lover of animals, Dan, regularly goes hiking or mountain biking on the many hills and mountains to enjoy the wildlife, like the Black Tail deer who share the hills of his home in Marin County. "People are always complaining about them eating their flowers, but I find them so beautiful and graceful that when I come across them I always feel lucky. There are also lots of raccoons and possums which are also fun to watch."

I feel very lucky to have found something that I like to do and that I am finally able to support myself with. I've tried to write programs that people will find useful and I appreciate their support of them and me.
