: Dogs' bodies don't absorb cholestarol? Well, I've seen more than one
: overweight pooch in my lifetime to disprove your statement. Ummmmm....cholesterol DOESN'T cause obesity- that is caused by
excess fat in the diet not being burned off by sufficient activity.
What cholesterol does do is to act in the clogging of arteries,
called artherosclerosis, which blocks the flow of blood to the heart
or to the brain- causing a heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol is
not found in ANY plant food- only animal flesh, dairy products, and
eggs. So those fat dogs you saw were probably overfed on fatty foods
and not exercised properly; it wasn't a result of cholesterol.
: Too much of anything can have bad results for humans and their pets.
: Just keep a good balance of everything and you and Rover will be OK.
Yes, that's true-- in fact most Americans eating a meat-based
diet are getting too much of bad things- too much cholesterol and
fat (leading to heart disease), too much protein (as much as 3x the
recommended allowance, leading to other complications such as
osteoporosis, since protein acts against the body's ability to
ABSORB calcium, much more important than the consumption of calcium).
And then meat has too little nutrients- vitamins are more abundant in
plant foods, meat has zero fiber, and few if any complex carbohydrates.
You might be able to get away with eating meat once a week, which is
common in some healthy, mostly vegetarian cultures, but which I doubt
is your case---- but all evidence points to humans being physiologically designed to eat a diet of grains, legumes, vegetables,
fruits, and nuts.
