My girlfriend was offered training in McDonalds open procedures
about a year ago. This involved starting at 6.00am and working
until 10.00am or later. This would mean she needs to get up at
5.30 am. As she is still at school they only give her this shift
on weekends. Her only hesitance was because she would need a
sleep in fairly regularily after getting up at 7.00am every day
for school. To relieve this the store she works at said she would only have
to do it about once or twice a month. After accepting the offer she found from experience and other
'open' staff that the jobs required couldn't be done in the
hour before opening time (7.00am) so she began starting at 5.30am
so she could do the job properly. All of the other 'open' staff
do the same thing. None of them have been paid for this extra
1/2 an hour they do. This 1/2 an hour is vital. Without it
they would come under criticism for failing to do their job
correctly. To start at 5.30am she must get up at, at the latest 5.00am.
She has done 'open' 29 times in the last 9 months.
This 1/2 an hour works out to about $150 wages outstanding seeing
as though she works on weekends.
At one stage she went about a month and a half (mind you this is
while she is attempting year 12) of getting up at 7.00am monday
to fridays and then 5.00am on Saturday and Sunday. Because
of her large amounts of homework she only worked on weekends,
however this homework meant he couldn't go to bed early.
Such strain is not suitable for someone so young (17 years old)
and she knows that as soon as she turns 18 she won't get the
shift anymore (they've already started training others) because
they will have to pay her weekend rates on an adult wage.
