The McLibel case has little to do with free speech. Free speech has always existed for McDonald's, but rarely existed for those on the left, greenies, trade unions and other groups who threaten the existence of the state and its superstructure. In capitalist society, free speech is readily available to those with the wealth, power, and privilege, to command it. Free speech will only become a reality when organisations like McDonald's, who spend how many billions of dollars a year on advertising (according to the UN, companies like McDonald's spend around three times as much money on advertising as would be required to feed all of the world's starving children) - putting their point across - no longer exist. No matter how authentic or outrageous a claim someone makes about a transnational corporation like McDonald's, I would never defend McDonald's. Let their thousands of marketing and advertising executives, PR specialists, lawyers, and bosses, do that for them. ![]() None.
