Safety Monitor, March 96. (UK)The franchise operators of Mcdonalds restaurant in Lichfield, Robert and
Caron Cowan, were fined ú5000 (stirling), plus ú400 (stirling) costs
for allowing a hazardous substance to be used by inadequately protected staff,
causing a 17 year old employee to nearly lose the sight of one eye in an
acciden tat the restaurant. They pleaded guilty under the Health and Safety
at Work Act 1974 of failing to control a substance hazardous to health and
safety and with not giving suitable instructions or providing protective
clothing, and with not making a suitable assessment of the risks under COSHH
(Control of substances hazardous to health) Regulations. The case, brought by
Lichfield District Council, was heard at Lichfield Magistrates Court on
27.9.95.
