To the Burger King crew chief in Canada
You need to check out the Employment Standards Act for your province.
Under this law (in most and probably all provinces) employers cannot
refuse a women maternity leave. The employer doesn't give the
employee paid leave it is an unpaid leave, which the employees EI covers
to the tune of 75 per cent of pay.
You will probably find that paid vacations are also the law. In Ontario for example after the first 12 months you get 2 weeks paid vacation, and you must
be paid at least 4 per cent of your total wages for that 12 month period.
As far as firing an employee who explored his or her "union option",
it is illegal for an employer to do so and has been for quite some time.
You can probably find the Employment Standards Act for your province on
the internet. I know that the Acts for B.C., Ontario and Prince Edward
Island are on the net and don't be intimidated they are all in plain English.
In short, learn what your rights are.
