The Bible vs. Compassion

Did God put animals here for us to use (synonym: abuse) as we see fit?
I think the present nightmare experienced by factory animals is a far cry from the peaceful life of food animals when the bible was written. It's conceivable that if the authors were doing their writing today, they might be sickened and not include those verses! And I suspect that some using this argument today may be looking for some way out of a corner and that they may not wholeheartedly believe it.
Are there any Christians out there who really believe this line, and if so aren't you saying that your compassionate God endorses the hellish torture of animals raised for food today?
