Open Letter to the Media

Dear Editor:

Sun Microsystems, Inc. invites you to attend the 2nd annual JavaOne conference being held at Moscone Center in San Francisco, April 2-4. With exhibits by 300 companies and 85 in-depth tech sessions, JavaOne is the only place to get all the latest Java industry news. At this year's event, Sun will outline Java's direction for the next 12 months and make important Java platform and product announcements. Other Java industry leaders will also have news. And the Software Developers West conference is happening in San Francisco the same week. So if you cover software and technology, you can't afford not to be at JavaOne.

Keynote speakers include Scott McNealy, CEO of Sun Microsystems; Dr. Alan Baratz, JavaSoft president; James Gosling, Java's creator; and Vinton Cerf of MCI, often referred to as the "father of the Internet."

Two major events will be held on April 2, opening day. At 8:30 a.m., Alan Baratz and James Gosling will open the conference with keynote presentations. This will be followed by a Java industry press Q&A session at the Forum, which is adjacent to the Moscone Center. You are also invited to attend a special press luncheon at the Forum beginning at noon. Following the luncheon, Scott McNealy will host a Sun Microsystems' press conference at 12:45 p.m. in the same location. At that time, Scott will outline Sun's own plans for Java, including Java platform updates, development tools and how Sun will use Java internally.

Additional JavaOne highlights follow below.

Press can attend JavaOne free of charge. To register, simply contact Denise Whitley at 415-463-4003, or via e-mail at denise_whitley@yr.com.

We are now scheduling one-on-one interviews for the press with key executives from various Sun divisions. If you'll be attending JavaOne and are interested in setting up such a meeting, please contact Jane Rauckhorst (jane_rauckhorst@bm.com) at 415-463-4015 or Taylor Kiland (taylor_kiland@bm.com) at 415-463-4009. Executive interviews are subject to availability, but we will do our best to fulfill your requests.

With 300 exhibitors, dozens of tech sessions, more than 8,000 attendees and hundreds of Java-based applications for many industries being demoed - many for the first time - JavaOne is ground zero for the next wave of computing. The many third-party press conferences, birds of a feather meetings and tech sessions all make San Francisco the place to be from April 2 to 4. See you there!
