In Japan, there is a rite called Yuino, which is performed to symbolize an engagement. Ceremonial presents are exchanged between the household of the groom and the household of the bride and greetings offered at both homes. These are the documents used during this ritual. They include a list of the presents sent, a receipt prepared by the family receiving them, a family list, and a list of relatives. It appears that at this time, yuino is not performed with as much enthusiasm as in the past. People give wedding rings as in western countries, and even hold western style weddings.
