In Japan, when people give a present of money at a wedding, funeral or other occasion, it is common practice to place the money in a white envelope like the one shown in the photograph. For happy events such as weddings, births, or at festivals, either a red and white or a gold and silver narrow string called a mizubiki is attached to the envelope. At funerals and other rituals of mourning for the death of a person, the string color is either black and white or white and yellow. Even now on the eve of the 21st century it is extremely rude to the recipient to accidentally use the wrong color. This is one aspect of the culture of Japan, where courtesy and ritual are revered.
