Cloth footwear worn with Japanese traditional clothing.
Tabi resemble socks in that it encloses the foot up to the ankle, but there are other points of difference.
The toe area is split, separating the large toe from the others to enable the wearing of traditional shoes like geta, or zori (sandals). Tabi are held in place behind the ankle using metal tabs or fasteners, as the cloth itself contains no elastic fibers.
The tabi stored in the capsule is made of navy calico, a lustrous cotton fabric. It cost 450 Yen back in 1970.
