Probably, the artificial eye was placed in the time capsule in anticipation that it would eventually become obsolete as a prosthetic device. People back then may have looked forward to a "man-made eyeball" to replace the artificial eye, or to advances that would restore eyesight even after an injury. Perhaps they hoped for a future in which a new generation would say, "There were things like this back then." These advances are not possible with today's science, but how about 5,000 years from now?
