Mount Everest, known more commonly today as Chonoranma, is the world's highest mountain. It has an elevation of 8,848 meters. Even now, at the threshold of the 21st century, it is no easy task to scale its peak, but stalwart mountain climbers continue to take on the challenge time after time.
The rock in the photo was brought back by a Japanese expedition organized by Nihon Sangaku-kai (Japan Alpine Society? / Japan Alpine Association?), which successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 11, 1970. It was delivered by seven members of the expedition, including Mr. Sumiyoshi, to the Matsushita Pavilion at EXPO '70 in Osaka on June 18.
The fist-sized specimen, while worn smooth by wind and snow, is actually an aqueous sedimentary rock, proving that Mount Everest was once under the sea.
