Shortly after the Games, the brand new 83,100 seat stadium, will go through a fast metamorphosis. About one third of the stadium will be demolished to be reshaped as a baseball diamond that will become home to the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
Many people find the Olympic mascot "Izzy" difficult to describe. He is a computer designed image who made his debut at the closing ceremony of the 1992 games. The mascot's full name, is appropriately "Whatizit".
In an effort to impress the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members as the city bid for the Olympic Games, the people of Atlanta went, actually ran, to great lengths. When IOC members were in town, leaders of the Atlanta bid made sure hundreds of joggers were running in the streets. Despite only a few days notice, a 5,000 meter road race was arranged and no less than 7,500 runners turned up!
While the Atlanta Games have been dubbed by some cynics as the "Corporate Games" and are expected to generate around $5 billion dollars, the Sydney Games of 2000, are already being called "The Green Olympics". The organizers have gone to great efforts to secure the environment. The Australians have even built a tunnel under a neighboring bay from the site of the Olympic stadium to ensure the survival of rare species of frogs.
