Barcelona hosted the 1992 Games as both a proud Catalan-Spanish City and as a metropolis of a newly united Europe. However, in that very same Europe war was raging in Sarajevo. IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch sent a plea for peace from the Olympic city.
The Games were dramatically shot into action at the Opening Ceremony when Spanish archer Antonio Rebollo, lit the flame with his bow and burning arrow. The true sign of times were multi-millionaire professional athletes now featured as an integral part of the Games. Led by Michael Jordan, the United States "Dream Team" fled the Olympic Village for $900 a night hotel accomodations. |
