Musical tastes spanned the spectrum in1984 -- from recently created "Rap" (Run-D.M.C released the first Rap album to go gold this year) to the old-fashioned crooning of Spanish Julio Iglesias who had just hit the U.S. charts singing in English. Olympic organizers found somewhat of a compromise in Lionel Richie who succeeded in rocking the closing ceremony away "All Night Long".
As women athletes ran their first Olympic marathon with great success, Geraldine Ferraro ran in another important race as the first female United States Vice-presidential candidate. Ferraro and her presidential running mate Walter Mondale were easily defeated by the Reagan-Bush tandem. Ronald Reagan's natural inclination for the limelight led him to the Los Angeles Olympics where he became the first American president to open the Olympic Games. |
