The political scene may have dominated by the oil-crisis, but social currents were not out of energy. It was a year of woman's "firsts". Woman were admitted to American military academies. Were awarded Rhodes scholarships. And American prime-time TV had it's first female news anchor, Barbara Walters. Meanwhile disco was king and long hair was the rage for young men and women alike. Equality and daring youth, the signature signs of these times did not bypass the Games. Future, rather than past athletes of both sexes were honored with lighting the Olympic flame. The undisputed star of the Game's would be a teenage girl, Romania's Nadia Comaneci. Perhaps the most genuine "sign of the times" was the streaker who took the field naked during the closing ceremonies
