A world oil crisis drove costs to four time over the original estimates. Living conditions were cozy at Olympic Village where up to 14 athletes were housed per unit, some sleeping in the kitchen. Despite difficulties, the Games left a positive impression and during the next 26 years the Olympics would return five times to North America.
