Long-distance runner Billy Mills, a half-Sioux Native American was orphaned at age 12. Sent to an institute for Native American youth in Kansas, he took up long distance running as part of his boxing training. He arrived in Tokyo virtually unknown but soon made his mark winning the gold medal in the 10,000 meters. In the process he beat out three long distance medalists from past and future Olympics.
The Sioux community honored him for his achievements by presenting him with a gold ring from the elders of the Ogala Sioux tribe. He was granted warrior status and named "Love of his Country".
The rigorous training of the Japanese Womens' Volleyballl
team included a brutal practice schedule six hours a day ,
seven days a week, 51 weeks a year.
The team went on to win the gold medal with ease.
The team captain, Masae Kasai was concerned however,
about the toll the grueling schedule took on her personal
life. At a reception at the prime minister's office celebrating
the team's victory she confided to the prime minister himself
that the long training hours made it difficult for her to meet men.
Prime Minister Sato acted quickly and introduced her to Kazuo
Nakamura whom she later married.







After leading his country to glory on the Olympic
basketball floor, Bill Bradley now shows leadership on
different turf. After a Hall of Fame career with the
New York Knicks, Bradley was elected to the United States
Senate where he currently represents New Jersey. finish.
