Long-distance runner Billy Mills, a half-Sioux Native American was orphaned at age 12. Sent to an institute for Native American youth in Kansas, he took up long distance running as part of his boxing training. He arrived in Tokyo virtually unknown but soon made his mark winning the gold medal in the 10,000 meters. In the process he beat out three long distance medalists from past and future Olympics.
The Sioux community honored him for his achievements by presenting him with a gold ring from the elders of the Ogala Sioux tribe. He was granted warrior status and named "Love of his Country". |
