Size has never been a handicap for the Finns -- a people who have won more Olympic medals per capita than any other nation. To this day, Helsinki, only 367,000 in population, inspire a model for Olympic organization, facilities and above all friendly hospitality. Finland's great long-distance running history was evident at the opening ceremony when nine time gold medalist Paavo Nurmi delivered the torch to four-time champion Hannes Kolehmainen who lit the Olympic flame. The 70,000 seat stadium is still considered one track and field's most inspiring venues, and the heated and pine-scented Olympic pool was a luxury previously unknown to swimmers. Finns opened their homes to visitors, making up for a hotel shortage and friendly neighbor Denmark sent extra trolley cars to ease the transportation situation. | |
