Phil Edwards of Canada tied an Olympic record in 1932 by winning three bronze medals in a single Games (800m, 1,500m and 4x400m). He went on to a track and field record of winning five bronze medals. He never won any other medals.

Lauri Lehtinen of Finland and Ralph Hill of the United States recorded an identical time in the 5,000m race, 14:30.0. The gold went to Lehtinen. This was the only Olympic race ever longer than 200 meters in which top two finishers recorded identical time.

The men's 3,000m steeplechase was run over the longest 3,000 m ever. An error by the lap counter resulted in competitors running an extra lap.
