The 4x100m relay was held for the first time and won by Great Britain. The Americans were disqualified in the semi-final. American sprinters have gone on to win every 4x100m relay in which they have ever completed. In 1912, 1960 and 1988 they were disqualified and in 1980 did not participate in the Moscow games.

Baseball was held as demonstration sport for the first time in 1912. It became an official sport in 1992.

The modern pentathlon, a military event combining running, swimming, fencing, shooting and horse-riding was held for the first time in 1912. Sweden's Gosta Lillehook won the first gold medal.
Ironically, Swedish officers won this military-inspired event five times and collected 14 of 15 medals while their nation remained neutral in both world wars. Since World War II Sweden has won the event nine
out of 18 competitions. |
