The times were changing in 1908. The greatest Empire the world had known, that of the British, was giving way to a new force, the United States. If the British Empire was built by trade, force and diplomacy, the emerging force was doing it with industrial innovation. In 1908 the Ford Model T, the world's first mass produced car, was introduced at the moderate price of $850, making it available "to any working man making a good salary". These changes of current were evident at the Olympic competition too, with the Londoners giving the Americans quite a cold reception. Disputes between the two nations, over rules and officiating, broke out daily through the duration of the Games.
