The Marathon course featured several hills and only one water stop (from a self-service well). No wonder Marathon runners struggled. The winning time of 3:28.53 was by far (by 29 minutes) the slowest in Olympic history.

The 12 nations competing in the 1904 Games set a record low for attendence in a Summer Olympic Games. Of the 651 athletes 542 were from the USA. Among the 109 athletes not from the USA, 52 were Canadian. Many of the 44 Europens and 54 athletes not representing a North American country, were based in either the USA or Canada. |
