In 1894 Baron de Coubertin convened a congress in Paris with the idea to revive the Olympic idea in the year 1900. But enthusiasm was so great that the 2,000 delegates insisted the Games begin sooner. Athens, home of the ancient games, was the natural choice to be host but the Greeks lacked finances. Wealthy Greeks living overseas funded most of the neccessary capitol. There was no lack of spirit during the opening festivities which drew a crowd of 80,000 spectators in the stadium and an additional 20,000 who perched themselves on surrounding hills. Excitement reached new peaks as the 245 athletes were greeted by trumpeters upon entering the stadium. Olympic fervor sparked spontaneous celebrations across the Greek countryside. D uring the Games, marathon runners, cyclists and other competitors were welcomed and celebrated as heroes everywhere they went.
