A hot topic throughout the world in the early 1980s was the New Wave,
which stimulated a new movement in art. The first photographs of Georges
Rousse, who made his debut at the Twelfth Paris Biennial in 1982, reflected
the spirit of the times, an era of liberated pictures such as his. In America
and Europe, pictures by Rousse appeared in a number of exhibits held to
introduce new artistic trends that appeared in profusion in France at that
time. In 1984, he took part in the Sidney Biennial, and submitted works to a
group exhibition held at the Seibu Art Gallery in Tokyo in 1985.
In the latter half of the 1980s, Rousse abandoned his early concrete pictures
focused on human images in order to switch over to simple geometric forms,
and thereby establish his unique blend of painting and photography in the art
world. At about this time, in various countries, young artists using
photo-
graphs to create original works found themselves in the limelight. The
works
of Rousse, which were formerly heretical intruders in the art world,
obtained
the status of pioneering works and became the focus of widespread new
interest as a result of a reassessment of the photographic media.
Important one-man shows of Rousse's work have been held in many countries.
He won the Photography National Grand Prix in 1993, and is now hailed as the
creator of the most important photographs in France. A series of splendid
one-man shows held in Paris and outlying regions in 1994 caused a
considerable sensation. His works are being collected in the Pompeideau
Center in Paris and at other art museums around the world.
