"The autumn leaves are so brilliant, even more than
the flowers in the spring." (Prince Toshihito)

[Shokatei]

Shokatei, located on the peak of Oyamashima and the highest in the garden, was built as a tearoom for viewing cherry blossoms in the spring and scarlet maple leaves in the autumn.
The long-standing tradition of hanging a specially dyed noren curtain with a print of "tatsutaya" when noblemen visit is still practised, and it reminds us of many famous poems.

In old times, one could enjoy the scenery of seasonal changes from Shokatei, from Higashiyma and Kitayama toward Arashiyama. This spot was also that of "kunimi" for Prince Toshihito, then heir to the throne, to overlook his country.
