The Sumida Fireworks Display at Ryogoku was first held in 1733. Yahei Kagiya set off a mere 20 bursts. Even so, it was so spectacular that he became famous all over Edo. The festival was repeatedly discontinued and then revived due to the war, environmental concerns and other reasons. The festival was last reinstituted in 1978 at the Sumida Fireworks Festival. Since the first display, the festival has a history of some 264 years.
