* St. Elmo's light that Dr. Darwin witnessed
One night, when the Beagle was at the entrance of La Plata River in South America, Dr. Darwin saw a marvelous scene. The scene, the so-called "fire works of Nature," is a phenomenon that appears to allow the masts and decks of ships to give out pale light. It is called the "St. Elmo's light".
