This is an animation device which was popular in the 1830s, named the "zoetrope". Turning it round and round, you can see moving pictures through the slits of the cylinder. Sequencial pictures, which correspond to the film, are put around the inside of the cylinder. Substituting the film, people could enjoy various animations.
