lAbout the Facilities and Your Accommodation
Arctic Watch at Cunningham Inlet on Somerset Island exists because of space age composite fabric technology. The entire facility was delivered by twin otter aircraft requiring over 125 flights and erected on site in 1991. This facility was designed and constructed by Sprung Structures of Calgary, Canada. The facility is a permanent installation eventhough it is only open to guests in the summer months. The Cunningham Inlet biosphere has been designed to withstand winds of 100 knots and temperatures of -75 Celsius. Summer weather conditions vary from +5 to +15 Celsius with winds from calm to 50 km/hr.
Somerset Island is a polar desert and is therefore very dry in the summer and receives relatively low snow levels in the winter. The landscape is very expansive and is interspersed with arctic flora throughout the short Arctic summer. It is asy to misjudge distances because of the vastness of the land.
The Cunningham Inlet Habitat is located above the estuary of the Cunningham River approximately 800 meters from the whales who migrate up the river in July and August of each year. The exact walking route to the whales varies from one year to the next depending upon the natural path of the river. We follow the river to minimize the long term cumulative impact of traveling over the surface of the tundra. By following the river our tracks are rembved each year by the natural activity of the river.

The Habitat consists of a large structure with vaulted ceilings where group events take place such as: orientation and presentations. The Habitat also has a storehouse, communications center, commercial kitchen, dining area and wash rooms with showers. The majority of the staff stay in the main Habitat.
The guests stay in individual composite "Qarmaqs" which is the Inuit word for "permanent summer dwelling" and is similar to a cabin with wooden floors, carpet and framed with aluminum beams and composite fabric. The modern design is inspired by ancient whalebone houses used by the Inuit's for thousands of years in the Arctic. Each qarmaq houses two guests in either separate or queen size beds with duvets.
Each qarmaq is equipped with a flush toilet in a separate cubicle, cold water sink, heater and ceiling fan. The composite fabric allows light to enter the qarmak. Entrance is gained through an aluminum door with adjustable glass windows and screens. Each qarmak has a window equipped with screens and a glass window.
