We normally think of moths as slow moving creatures of the night. Hyles
lineata is certainly an exception to this stereotype.
On early mornings in June we sometimes observed hundreds of this active species of sphinx moth
flying over the big bluestem grass in the prairie restoration area at Big Eastern, their wings
blurred like those of hummingbirds.
This individual was photographed in late afternoon
feeding on Hairy Puccoon one of the most important
nectar flowers for butterflies and moths during late spring and early summer.
