Bumblebee in a Prickly Pear Cactus Flower

Bombus sp.
Bumblebee

Bumblebees are the most prominent native bee species on the sand prairie. When prickly pear cactus opuntia humifosa is in bloom in July, they go into a frenzy of activity and are easy to approach. Many bumblebees reside in burrows in the easy-to-dig sand of the small dunes.
