LiteStep

Size: 1.6Mb
Licence: Freeware
Platforms: Win95/98/NT
Where: http://www.litestep.net/
Rating: Four Stars

LiteStep is a complete replacement for the Windows shell that resembles the extremely popular Linux AfterStep interface. If you've never heard of AfterStep, you might just be interested in a shell that doesn't eat too much memory or CPU, looks great, and is a little bit more stable than the Windows standard.

Litestep consists of a Wharf, pop-up menu and some things called modules. The Wharf is like a floating toolbar used to organise your most-used applications & modules. The Popup menu automatically gives you access to all your installed applications via the standard "Start Menu" and any other folders or applications you want. Modules are designed for particular functions, such as a clock, temperature monitor, CPU load monitor, and more. Litestep's Virtual Windows Manager increases your normal workspace four times and its Wharf module gives you instant access to anywhere on the virtual desktop.

Themes, skins and enhancements abound giving you the chance to have a truly unique desktop experience. The LiteStep project is under the GNU software license and has a dedicated crew of developers and supporters. A word of caution though, make sure you read the manual because tinkering with the shell is fun but not for the faint hearted!

Alexa 3.0

Size: 1.7Mb
Licence: Freeware
Platforms: Win95/98/NT ,Mac OS
Where: http://www.alexa.com/
Rating: Four & Half Stars

Alexa adds another toolbar to your browser that provides useful information about the sites you are viewing and suggests related sites of interest. The technology has already been adopted in the latest Netscape Navigator as the "What's Related" feature. Users of earlier versions of Netscape or IE 4 can bolt the free Alexa Web navigation service onto their browser as well.

Alexa "Snapshot" gives users an overview of Alexa site data and related links, with select information from all the various Alexa panels. Alexa's "Site Registration" displays the name and contact information of the registered site owner, by cleverly looking up the address and owner of the domain name itself. "Site Stats" rates site popularity (complete with Alexa user reviews and votes), speed, traffic and how often content is updated. "Related Links" suggests other sites of interest based on the page being viewed; sort of like constantly doing a search on a concept based search engine like Excite (http://www.excite.com/).

Alexa has a special "EB Search" function that links in with an online dictionary, thesaurus and Encyclopedia Britannica's Eblast service (http://www.eblast.com/). Hooking up to Brittanica's online content is a bit of a tease for the full service but makes for a very informative web guide nonetheless.

IPSentry

Size: 5.4Mb
Licence: $99 US
Platforms: Win95/98/NT
Where: http://www.ipsentry.com/
Rating: Three & Half Stars

IPSentry is Windows based network monitor who keeps watch over the servers in your network. IPSentry can continuously monitor your internet and intranet network servers 24 hours a day, including SMTP & POP (email) servers, web sites, ftp servers, news servers, routers, or any other TCP/IP based service you might need to keep an eye on.

IPSentry is clever enough to check on the status of CGI and other server based scripts to make sure none of your web applications are dead. One of the handiest features is the ability to monitor your server disk drive space, and all the NT System Services. Network hardware can also be supervised, making sure your internal routers, bridges and radius servers are up and running. If anything should fall over, IPSentry will notify you via any or all of several different methods including alphanumeric pager, beeper, email, syslog alert or even launch an external application.

Although not for your average home user, IPSentry is ideal for anyone in charge of making sure network services are "all systems go". Not a bad way of keeping tabs on your ISP or regional offices through a permanent connection either.

WebZip

Size: 1.2Mb
Licence: Shareware $39.95US
Platforms: Win95/98/NT
Where: http://www.spidersoft.com/
Rating: Three & Half Stars

WebZip is an offline browser that will download and store an entire web site or sections thereof. Just run through the Wizard, select your options and your away, sucking the life out of your Internet connection and downloading web pages and images for local storage.

WebZIP gives you the option of saving all pages, images, sounds and other media files directly onto your hard disk for a "personal Intranet", or automatically squashing your web sites into a single Zip file. Zip files come complete with supporting media and directory structure so you can literally email entire web sites to family and friends. Although, there was some trouble with Java classes the support for external media files was generally good.

WebZip can be scheduled to go off and retrieve your web sites at any time. There's options galore, including restricting the depth of links retrieved, file types, number of threads used for downloading, and advanced URL filters. The "Smart Update" feature lets you re-run WebZIP tasks and quickly download only the web pages and items that have changed since the last time you looked. When minimised, WebZip creates a "drop zone" for dragging and dropping URLs - once activated, WebZip quietly goes to work downloading all of your links in the background.
