WebForum

Welcome to WebForum. To use this service you must have a login. If you do not yet have an id and password, then you may get one by filling out the registration form.

Unfortunately, if you're WWW client does not support FORMS, you cannot use this service. In particular, your client must support hidden variables in forms. Clients that I know of that support this include NCSA Mosaic 2.4, and Netscape 0.95. PLEASE NOTE: Lynx 2.3 does not work with this system.

What is WebForum?

While I was considering the difficulties of maintaining mailing lists, as well as the increasing problems of using/reading Usenet news with the number of adverst, etc., I wondered if the web could be used to provide an alternative. I did a first version, and then found out about WIT and HyperNews. Neither quite gave me what I wanted - access control, no server-side includes, etc., so I started work on adapting them. This is the result: WebForum. Maybe I was mad to redo the work already done in WIT and HyperNews, but I redid it (in part) to learn how it could be done, and I think there are differences (although mainly from the perspective of administration.

A forum is a web page that allows user updates. It allows you to add messages, follow-up through threads, etc. Yes, this is very much like Usenet. It's meant to be. However, I administer what goes on here, which means I can get rid of things like adverts, spams, etc., by getting rid of the culprits.

How do I access a forum?

Simple answer: Follow the link.

Complex answer: If the link is to a restricted forum then you must apply for permission to access the forum. You can do this by emailing me at afzal@divsun.unige.ch and telling me what forum you want to be added to.

What rules apply to using a forum?

Basically, you must not abuse the system. You must not pester or otherwise annoy other users. You may not place adverts on this system. If I (the administrator) have reason to believe that you have been abusing the system then I reserve the right to deny you access to the system.

How do I create a forum?

You kindly ask that I make one for you. Sorry, but at the moment I will not allow remote creation of forums.
