Saving Face His: Past Tips

Lessen the chances of infections and scarring...

Leading an active life can have its hard knocks. When those knocks lead to cuts, it is important that the wound heals properly to avoid scarring. Some of you may think that having a scar adds character, but let your mind be your character builder--not the marks on your body! Here are some steps you should follow to prevent infection and lessen the chances of scarring:

  1. Always clean the cut with soap and water. Do not use hydrogen peroxide unless there is dirt in the cut itself. Hydrogen peroxide can kill surrounding tissue and stop the area from healing.

  2. Keep the wound moist with a petroleum-type antibiotic ointment.

  3. Limit the amount of time the wound is exposed to air. Cover it with a bandage and change the dressing frequently to avoid infection.

  4. Keep the wounded area out of the sun.
If you are not satisfied with the result after the area has healed, consult a doctor about dermabrasion and laserbrasion. Both techniques can diminish visible scar tissue.
