Editor service
Use this service to edit files on remote machines. There are two ways to edit files:
- Manually--use this method to edit a single file.
- Using a script file--use this method to automatically configure a file on a machine.
To edit a file manually:
- In the Immediate tab, click Edit. The Jconfig Editor opens.
- Use Jconfig Editor to open, edit and save the required file.
- Close the editor application.

Environment Settings service
Use this service to view the environment settings for the host to which you are connected. To change these settings, you need to use Windows NT/95/98 procedures. For details, check your Windows documentation. You can append this information to the Jconfig Administration Log file.
To add environment information to the Administration Log:
- On the Environment Settings toolbar, click Save to Log.
- To view the Administration Log, click Log on the Jconfig toolbar.

File service
The File service, like Windows Explorer, lets you browse to and find files, check file properties, create new folders, and rename, delete, or move files on remote machines. If there are connections open to multiple remote hosts, you can perform file operations. For example, you can move files from one host to another. The File service does not have drag and drop functionality. To move files between folders, use cut/copy and paste.

For many of the operations, a confirmation dialog box opens where you can confirm or cancel the selected operation.

Cut--Removes the selected item from its current location. The item is not removed until you paste it to a new location. |

Copy--Copies the selected item. The item is not copied until you paste it to a new location. |

Wildcard Copy--Specifies a group of files to be copy. The selected files are not copied until you paste them to a new location. Note: Directories are not copied. |

Paste--Pastes a cut or copied item into the selected directory. |

New Folder--Creates a new folder in the selected directory. |

Rename--Renames the selected file or directory. |
|
Delete--Removes the selected file or directory. |
|
Find Files--Searches for files. |
|
Properties--Displays the properties of a selected drive, directory, or file. You can modify the permissions for files and directories. |

Refresh--Updates the directory tree display. |
INI File service
Use this service to view and modify entries in an .ini file, such as win.ini. You can add, modify or delete sections or entries in the selected .ini file.
To open an INI file:
- On the INI File toolbar, click Open. The Browse dialog box opens.
- Select an .ini file and click OK. The contents of the selected file display in the pane called Hummingbird INI File Service. Folder icons identify sections, and page icons identify entries in the .ini file.
To add new sections to the INI file:
- On the INI File toolbar, click New Section. The Add New Section dialog box opens.
- In the Section Name box, type the new name and click OK. The new section appears in the INI File Service pane. Changes are immediate and are saved in the .ini file.
To add new entries to the INI file:
- On the INI File toolbar, click New Entry. The Add New Entry dialog box opens.
- In the Entry Name box, type the new name and click OK. The new entry appears in the INI File Service pane. Changes are immediate and are saved in the .ini file.
To rename a section:
- Select a section and click Edit. The Edit Section Name dialog box opens.
- In the Section Name box, type the new name for the section and click OK. Changes are immediately made and saved in the .ini file.
To modify an entry:
- Select an entry and click Edit. The Edit Entry dialog box opens.
- Modify the entry as required and click OK. Changes are immediately made and saved in the .ini file.
To delete a section or entry:
Select a section or entry and click Delete. Changes are immediately made and saved in the .ini file.
Note: If you delete a section, you also delete all the entries in that section.
INI File toolbar
Multiple INI File service
Use this service, to search and modify multiple .ini files simultaneously. For example, you can search for a specific host name or password in a group of files, and then replace all occurrences of that host name or password with another value. You may combine any or all of the following three procedures in a single execution.
To add new entries and values:
- In the File Name box, specify files you want to modify, or click Browse to select a file. You can use the standard "?" and "*" wildcards to specify multiple files. For example, to change information in all Xstart files, type c:\exceed\user\*.xs.
- In the Section box, type the name of the section you want to modify.
- On the toolbar, click Add. The Add Entry dialog box opens.
- In the Operation section, select Set. Type the new entry and value in the Entry and Value boxes and click OK. True entries have a value of 1, while false entries have a value of 0.
- Repeat the previous step for any other new entries and corresponding values.
- When you have finished adding entries, click Execute. The changes are made to the files and status messages display as the changes are made.
- When the changes are complete, the Execution Status window opens indicating the status of all the attempted changes. If you close this window and then want to view it again, click View Status.
To modify existing .ini file entries and values:
- In the File Name box, specify files you want to modify, or click Browse to select a file. You can use the standard "?" and "*" wildcards to specify multiple files. For example, to change information in all Xstart files, type c:\exceed\user\*.xs.In the Section box, type the name of the section you want to modify.
- Specify the entries you want to modify:
- On the toolbar, click Add. The Add Entry dialog box opens.
- In the Operation section, select Match.
- Type the entry and value to change in the Entry and Value boxes and click OK. The existing value appears in the Multiple INI File Service pane. True entries have a value of 1, while false entries have a value of 0.
- Repeat the above steps for any other entries and corresponding values you want to modify.
- Specify the new values for the selected entries:
- On the toolbar, click Add. The Add Entry dialog box opens.
- In the Operation section, select Set.
- Type the new entry and value in the Entry and Value boxes and click OK. The new value appears in the Multiple INI File Service pane.
- Repeat the above steps for any other entries and corresponding values you want to modify.
- When you have finished adding entries, click Execute. The changes are made to the files and status messages display as the changes are made.
- When the changes are complete, the Execution Status window opens indicating the status of all the attempted changes. If you close this window and want to view it again, click the View Status button.
To edit INI File Service display entries and values:
- Select the entry you want to change and click Edit. The Update Entry dialog box opens.
- Change the entry and value parameters as required and click OK.
- Repeat the previous steps for any other entries and corresponding values you want to edit.
To delete entries and values from the window:
- Select a line in the display window and click Delete.
- Repeat the above step for any other entries and corresponding values you want to delete.

Add--Adds a match or set to a line in the INI file display.

Install service
Use this service to create desktop or Start menu shortcuts on the remote host.
To create a shortcut:
- Click the General tab.
- If you are creating a shortcut in a Start menu group, type the name of the group in the Group Name box.
- In the Command box, type the complete path for the executable application, including any command line options (for example, c:\windows\notepad.exe). Alternatively, click Browse to select the application.
- In the Start in box, type the directory where the application initially saves files.
- In the Description box, type a name for the shortcut.
- In the Placement drop-down list, select the location for the shortcut:
- Desktop--creates a desktop icon/shortcut
- Programs--creates a program icon in the Programs group (Windows Start menu)
- Startup--creates a program icon in the Startup group (Windows Start menu) so that the application opens automatically after Windows startup
- To make the icon available to all users on the remote host, select the Common check box. Clear this check box to make the icon available to only the currently logged in user.
- In the Run drop-down list, select the initial window size.
- To change the icon for the shortcut, do the following:
- Click the Icon tab.
- Select the Change icon check box.
- In the File Name box, type the name of file that contains the icon you want to use (*.exe, *.dll, *.ico) or click Browse to select the file.
- If the specified file contains multiple icons, type the name of the index for the icon in the Index box.
- Click Install to complete the process.
Java Property File service
Use this service to view and modify the Java parameters stored in a Java property (.pro) file. You can add, modify, delete and search for specific Java properties within the selected Java file.
To open a new property file:
- On the Java Property File toolbar, click Open. The Browse dialog box opens and displays all .pro files.
- Select the file you want to open and click OK.
To add properties:
- On the Java Property File toolbar, click Add. The Add Property dialog box opens.
- In the Property box, type the name of the new property.
- In the Value box, type the new value and click OK.
To edit properties:
- On the Java Property File toolbar, click Edit. The Edit Property dialog box opens.
- Type the new value in the Value box and click OK.
To delete properties:
- Select the property you want to delete.
- On the Java Property File toolbar, click Delete. Jconfig prompts you for confirmation of this action.
To find properties:
- On the Java Property File toolbar, click Find property. The Find dialog box opens.
- In the Property box, type the name (or a portion of the name) of the property you want to find. If you want to find only the string you typed in the box, select the Find Exact check box. All searches are case insensitive.
- Click Find. The Java Property File Service searches for the specified string. If you did not select the Find Exact option, click Find Next to search for the next instance of the specified string.
- Click Cancel to return to the Java Property File Service pane.

Message service
Use this service to send messages to the remote host to which you are currently connected. The message displays in a dialog box on the host.
To send a message:
- Specify the content of the message:
- In the Titlebar Text box, type the text that you want to display in the title bar of the message box.
- In the Message Text box, type the content of the message.
- In the Images section, select an icon to display with the message.
- To display the message time and date in the title bar, select the Display Time and Date Stamp check box.
- To preview the message, click Preview.
- To send the message, click Send Message.
Reboot service
You can use the reboot service to reboot remote machines. You can:
- reboot the remote machine immediately
- reboot the remote machine after a specified amount of time
- log off the current user without rebooting
To reboot immediately:
In the Reboot section, click Reboot.
To reboot with a delay (Windows NT only):
- In the Reboot with Delay section, specify the number of seconds you want to allow before the remote machine is rebooted.
- Click Reboot. A message appears on the remote monitor advising the user that the machine will reboot in the specified number of seconds. This gives the user time to save data and close any open applications.
To log off the current user (Windows NT only):
In the Logoff the Current User section, click Logoff. The remote host does not reboot.
Registry service
Use this service to add, modify and delete items in the remote PC's Registry. In the Registry Service display, window keys are identified with the folder icon. Values are indicated with the page icon. Refer to your Windows documentation for detailed information about keys and values.
To add registry keys:
- On the Registry service toolbar, select a key under which you want to place a new key and click Add Key. The Add Key dialog box opens.
- Type the new name in the Key Name box and click OK.
To add registry values:
- On the Registry service toolbar, select a key under which you want to place a new key and click Add Value. The Add Value dialog box opens, and the name of the selected key appears in the Add in box.
- In the Value Name box, type the new value name.
- In the Data Type box, select one of the three types of registry values:
- REG_SZ (String)
- REG_DWORD
- REG_BINARY
- REG_MULTI_SZ
- Click OK to display the appropriate Data dialog box for the Data Type selected.
- Type the appropriate value in the String, Dword, or Binary Data box and click OK.
To copy registry values:
- Select a value in the list and click Copy Value.
- Select a key under which you want to place the value and click Paste Value.
To find registry values:
- From the list of keys, select a key and click Find. The Find dialog box opens and the Look in box indicates the key/subkey path of your selection. If necessary, edit the path or specify another.
- In the Find Name box, type the name or the registry value you want to find.
- Select search options:
- Include Subkeys--Searches all subkeys under the key specified in the Look in box.
- Match Case--Searches according to the upper/lower case characters in the Find Name box.
- Match Whole String--Searches for instances of the entire character string.
- Specify where you want to view the search results.
- To add the results to the Jconfig Administration log, click Log. A list of keys or values that match the search criteria are added to the log. To view the search results, click View Log on the Jconfig toolbar.
- To display search results in the Registry service, click OK. The Find Registry Entry Results dialog box opens and displays keys or values that match the search criteria.
To update the Registry service display:
If you made Registry changes with another Registry editor (such as RegEdit) while the Registry service window was open, click Refresh to update the display with the current values.

System Information service
Use this service to:
- view remote system information
- append system and/or java information to the Administration Log
- launch applications on the remote machine
Viewing Remote System Information
The Remote System Information and Remote Java Information sections display information about the remote host and the Java properties on the host. You can modify property values using the Java Property File service.
To append information to the Administration Log:
To append system or Java information to the Administration log, click the corresponding button on the System Information toolbar.
To launch an application on the remote machine:
In the Run Remote Command section, type the complete path and file name for the executable file in the Command Line box, or click Browse to select a file. Then click Run.
