When you are responsible for a very large Web site, many people need to work on the web site at the same time. For these kinds of collaborative projects, Namo WebEditor supports Microsoft SourceSafe, a commonly used system of version control. In order to utilize WebEditor's SourceSafe support, the SourceSafe server software must be installed on your network server and the SourceSafe client software on each user's computer.
While the project files are stored on the SourceSafe server, a user copies the files from the server to her computer by selecting "Get Latest Version". The file is marked as being "checked out", and the user then works on her copy. After finishing the work, the user saves the file back to the server; it is now "checked in". In this way, team members working on the same files avoid file collisions and always have the latest version available. If you've used Microsoft SourceSafe, you understand how well this system works.
Namo WebEditor supports the managing of a SourceSafe system. This means that Namo WebEditor users can make use of SourceSafe functionality without having to launch the SourceSafe application. Namo WebEditor's SourceSafe functions are available only when you are working with an open project file.
The options for SourceSafe are found in the [Tools-Source Control] sub-menu, as shown below:
SourceSafe Project Setting
Use
this command to initially save your project to the SourceSafe server. When
you select this option, the SourceSafe project is created on the SourceSafe
server and then the web site documents are transferred to the SourceSafe
project.
SourceSafe Status Update
Shows the latest
SourceSafe status after making changes to files.
Get Latest Version
Copy files from the SourceSafe server to your computer. After copying, the
read-only attribute of the files remains unchanged until you "check
out" the files.
Check Out
When you check out the project files,
their read-only attribute is cleared and your ID will be shown on the SourceSafe
server to indicate that you have checked the files out. Checked-out files
are inaccessible by other users. Check Out does the same thing as Get
Latest Version in that it copies files from the SourceSafe server, but it
is different in that it clears the read-only attribute from the files.
Check In
When you "check in" files after editing them, the files are copied
back to the SourceSafe server and their read-only attribute is set. In this
way, the latest version of any file is always saved on the SourceSafe server.
After check-in, the files are available for other users to check out and
work on.
Add File to Source Control
Use
this command to add a new file to the SourceSafe server (you must first
create the file).
Remove File from Source Control
Use
this command to delete files no longer needed from the SourceSafe server.
To use
the SourceSafe function in Namo WebEditor, the following three procedures
must be performed first. When these are done, continue to Step 1 below.
-
The web site document files must be saved on the SourceSafe server.
- The local directory that will be used when you work on the files
from the SourceSafe server must be created on your computer.
- The
web site document files must be saved to the working directory using
the "Get Latest Version" command.
If you right-click a file in the Project window, the short cut menu for the project appears. You can select the SourceSafe commands from this shortcut, saving a trip to the main menu bar.
