Summary : part offline browser, part web monitoring tool, eCatch is also to be considered as a true plain-text search engine with advanced features.

Three different ways to search through eCatch - Back to the top !

  • Normal search in the current page. First select the Document view mode, then type in the words you are looking for in the corresponding input field; eCatch scrolls down the document untill a match is found and highlights it. Use arrow icons to jump from next to previous matches.
  • Search the web from any search engine frontpage; results will be displayed next time you connect. The way search engines process information is irrevelevant to those help files, so that we won't explain it. Click here in case you are interested about the way forms are managed. Note : after you submit a search item, retrieved answers are one or several pages that eCatch is able to refresh on demand like any other page.
  • eCatch allows advanced search within downloaded pages. That search is carried out without any index page : that is to say eCatch does not generate bulk keyword lists. Therefore, you need neither extra free disk space nor any specific index to search information. It may be argued processing a search on important documents is slow to achieve; this shortcoming is offset by the fact search is processed as a background task so that you can keep on working or even launch a simultaneous search in the meantime.

Advanced search - Back to the top !

Syntax resembles the Altavista one :

  • To search for different words including a full match, type "+".
  • To exclude or include pages containing a specific word, type "-".
  • The "?" character replaces a single letter provided that the letter is able to accept different values. Thus, if you type the word ?ar, eCatch might return bar and car answers.
  • The "*" character replacing the first or the last letter of a word means that word begins and ends up with any character.

Examples - Back to the top !

In case you wish to locate all pages containing the words holiday or holidays, maybe the words sun, sunshine and sea, excluding the word labor, type "+holiday* *sun* sea -labor".

The scrolling list under the input field displays the history of all previous searches. In case you wish to delete an history entry, right-click it to be asked whether you want to delete that single entry or the whole history.

Normal search and code search - Back to the top !

Advanced search relies on :

  • Normal search. The software looks for a plain-text full match (html code is ignored), without taking into account lower case and upper case letters, accents, special characters and html tags.
  • Code search. For specific use only. The software looks for a full match including html code, lower case and upper case letters and accents.

For any other search options, pop-up help displays as mouse rolls over.
