StreetSigns 2.5
|
For further information about StreetSigns Ver. 2.5 please check out our FAQ
StreetSigns 2.5 is a three part application consisting of the StreetSigns Reader program, a pre structured database for points of interest (POI's) , and a collection of maps.
MapDepot is TrekWare's repository of StreetSigns maps. At MapDepot you will find all of the currently available maps as well as the most current version of the StreetSigns 2.5 reader/viewer. Check back often as we are adding new maps all the time.
A StreetSigns city map file is composed of approximately one to four maps of the major metropolitan city. We call them tiles because you can jump from one tile to another. All maps tiles have an extension of .pdb. Maps tiles are approximately 100k to 400k in size.
Map Tips: When you install StreetSigns remember to include only the specific map tiles that you need. You can easily remove map tiles and replace them with others as needed.
This is the StreetSigns application program file. It displays the city maps tiles that are on the Palm Organizer. It has a .prc file extension.
Tip: Visit MapDepot often to ensure that you are using the most current version of StreetSigns.
A personal database (PersonalDB) saves all of your personal SignPosts (points of interest). Without the database loaded you will not have the search ability and/or depth of functionality. In fact, the product will not work without it. Every time you HotSync, your personal database is saved on your desktop computer in the folder Palm directory|user name|Backup.
StreetSigns 2.5 is a vector-based geographic mapping application designed specifically for the 3Com&#reg; Palm organizer and IBM&#reg; WorkPad. In fact, you might consider them intelligent or interactive maps. These maps are not bitmapped images or pictures of maps.
The interactive maps provide real-time zooming, scaling, searching and navigation throughout a map. The displayed map scale can be used to calculate distances.
Quickly search for the location of a street, a street address or the intersection of two streets.
AddressBook Search allows you to select an entry from your AddessBook and locate that address on the current map.
There are several fast and easy ways to scroll and navigate through a map; using the hard buttons, tapping on the screen, and using command strokes.
StreetSigns provides four fast and easy ways to zoom the Map View.
You can place your own Small SignPosts on the map to easily locate points of interest. It is quick to do and only takes up a few bytes of memory.
INFOBURST (assign information to your SignPost)
New to StreetSigns 2.5 is the INFOBURST . With this feature you can assign large amounts of information specific to the SignPost. Once your information is entered, define your SignPost by "Type & Sub-Type". There are 40 different Types of SignPosts to choose from such as:
This is the most powerful feature of StreetSigns 2.5. SignPost Search allows you to search for the various "Types" of SignPosts relative to your current location.
By selecting restaurants you narrow the search further by including the type of restaurant...Italian, Chinese, etc.. You may narrow the search even further by choosing a "distance" of (no limit, nearest, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 mile). The result to your search is then presented including the approximate distance from your point of origin.
Once the search for a SignPost has been completed, you jump back to the map view. SignPost Pointer has two hands, similar to those of a clock, which guide you between your origin and target/destination. The Pointer floats in the middle of the screen as you scroll back and forth between your origin and target/destination. This feature is very useful when the results of your search are actually off the current map view and you have to scroll around to find it.
With TrailMarkers you can manually trace a route on your map. Once completed you can then name it and save it for future reference.
This feature helps you manage the SignPosts in your database. You can edit the SignPost name, address, icon selection, Type, Sub-Type, and the attached textual information assigned to it.
To install StreetSigns 2.5 and selected maps to your Palm Organizer, use the Palm Desktop Install Tool.
Install StreetSigns as you would any other Palm Organizer application, however, keep in mind that StreetSigns is a three part application. You will need to install a map (.pdb), the application program file, called the StreetSigns Reader/Viewer, (StreetSigns.prc) and the personal database (PersonalDB.pdb).
Tip: As StreetSigns is not a desktop application and runs only on your Palm Organizer, there is only one set of files to install whether you have a PC, Mac or any other desktop computer.
Hint: SignPosts as well as TrailMarkers are maintained in the personal database (PersonalDB.pdb). MAKE CERTAIN TO COPY THE PersonalDB TO A DISK for safety. The PersonalDB automatically saves itself to the backup file in the Palm directory. However, if you spend time building SignPosts, take a few seconds to save a copy of it.

How to Delete StreetSigns and Maps
To free up memory on your Palm organizer, you may occasionally want to delete some programs such as the maps that you have installed but now wish to delete. It's easy to do.
Tap the Applications icon on your Palm organizer to open the Application Launcher. Tap the Menu icon (or the Memory icon on a Palm Professional) and then tap Delete (or Delete Apps). Scroll through the list of applications and tap on the application that you would like to remove. Tap the Delete button to display a confirmation message. If you're sure you've selected the correct application for deletion, tap the Yes button. Application and components are removed one at a time.
To start StreetSigns 2.5 open the StreetSigns application on the applications menu. After initialization, tap the Ok button when it appears on the StreetSigns splash screen.
During initialization, StreetSigns scans your AddressBook for any entries with zip codes that correspond to zip codes on the currently active map. You may notice a delay during this process, depending on the size of your address book.
StreetSigns opens with the Street Search screen.
The name of the current map is displayed at the top of the screen.
To use a different map, tap the down arrow beside the map name and select the map you want from the listbox. (When loading a new map, StreetSigns scans your AddressBook for any addresses with zip codes that correspond to zip codes on the selected map.
The Search Screen gives you three search modes: Street Search, Intersection Search and Address Book Search .
Tips: When you are lost, using the Intersection Search feature is an easy way to answer the question: Where am I?
To search for a specific address: write in the street number, add a space, and enter in the first few characters of the street name. Select the street from the list box and tap (Go to Map). The selected street address range is displayed, centered on the Map View.
To search for a street, write in the first few characters of the street name, then select the street from the list box and tap (Go to Map). The selected street address is displayed centered on the map.
If your street name crosses zip code boundaries on the current map, a popup list of zip codes is displayed for you to select the appropriate zip code for your search. If you do not select a zip code, the first zip code in the list is selected by default. Tap Go to Map and the selected street is displayed centered on the map.
Map Tips: Remember StreetSigns is an Intelligent map. It does however need your help while performing complex searches. For example: You are in Manhattan searching for 42nd Street. What you need to think about when you can't find it is that 42nd Street may actually be "E 42nd St". If you were to search for East 42nd Street, StreetSigns will not show it either. You must follow certain naming conventions. Street is written (St) no period and it is not spelled out in full. The same goes with East (E).
Intersection Search allows you to locate specific street intersections on the current map.
To search for an intersection, write in the first few characters of the first street name and select the street from the listbox. You will notice the @ symbol automatically appears at the end of the name. It tells StreetSigns that you are performing an Intersection search and connects the two streets together.
Now, write in the first few characters of the second street name, select that street from the listbox and tap Go to Map. Your selected intersection is displayed in the center of the Map View.
AddressBook Search allows you to select an entry from your AddressBook and locate that address on the current map.
When you select AddressBook Search, AddressBook records with zip codes that correspond to zip codes in the current map are loaded into the listbox for selection.
To search for an Address Book entry, write in the first few characters of the name, then select the name you want from the listbox. If the search is successful the address and zip code are displayed in the search field. Tap Go to Map to locate the address on the map.
An unsuccessful search can occur for a number of reasons. Sometimes the specific street address is not found on the current map. This happens when a zip code boundary overlaps adjacent maps. The AddressBook entry appears in the listbox because its zip code appears on the current map. However, the entire zip code area may not be covered by the current map. You may need to load an adjacent map to locate that specific street address.
Another reason could be an invalid AddressBook record (such as an incorrect zip code, or a non-standard abbreviation in the street name). An AddressBook record is valid if its address and zip code fields contain valid data. The address is valid if its format conforms to Postal Service standards . The zip code is valid if it contains five digits, or five digits, a dash and four digits.
(Please see Appendix A for details of USPS standard abbreviations for street name suffixes.)
The Map Scale, displayed below the listbox, allows you to increase or decrease the scale of the map in miles per inch. Tap + to increase the miles per inch (this is equivalent to zooming out). Tap - to decrease the miles per inch (this is equivalent to zooming in).
When the map scale is at 0.49 miles per inch (as in Local View) or less, all local roads and highways are drawn on the map. If the map scale is higher than 0.49 miles per inch, only the major roads and highways are drawn.
The Map View is displayed when you tap Go to Map on the Search Screen. If you have searched for a specific location, it is centered on the map. Other street names are not initially displayed.
Tap on a street to display its name. Once a street name is displayed on the map you can tap the text to hide it or save it as a Small SignPost. If you turn on the InfoBar feature and switch it from black to clear, the street name displays in the InfoBar instead of on the map. When the InfoBar is black the street names will appear on the map screen.
The Menu Button on your Palm Organizer pulls down the topline menu hidden within StreetSigns and provides access to the View, Markers and Options menus.
To return to the Search Screen from the Map View, select Street Search from the Options Menu, or use the Search button on the InfoBar to toggle between the Map View and the Search Screen.
You can scroll the map North, South, West or East by tapping on the edge of the map in the direction you want to scroll. You can also use the hard buttons to scroll: use the DateBook and AddressBook hard buttons to scroll West or East; use the up and down hard buttons to scroll North or South.
Tip: StreetSigns is an interactive map in the palm of your hand. Don't tap around to find something if you can simply search for it. If you are looking for #10 Palm St, search for it , don't hunt & peck.
You can zoom in or out on the Map View using the Zoom commands on the View Menu, or set the miles per inch scale on the Search Screen. You can also use the ToDo button to zoom to a Local View (street level) or use the Memo button for County View (far away).
StreetSigns maps can consist of one or more map tiles. Our large maps are called Metropolitan maps. Typically they include 4 tiles or maps. The idea is if you install a Metropolitan map and only need tiles 2 and 3, don't load tiles 1 and 4. You get the geography you are looking for without taking up too much memory on your Palm Organizer.
You can use County View to see a high level view of all the tiles loaded on your device. The currently active map is displayed with a heavier border than other tiles.
If you scroll past the boundary of the currently active map, the tile onto which you scroll is automatically loaded and becomes the active map.
In the Map View, tap the Menu button on your Palm Organizer , to access the View, Markers and Options menus. The StreetSigns topline menu bar displays at the top of the screen when you tap the Menu button. To remove it either select a function from it or tap the Menu button again.
Tip: Command strokes for each menu item are located to the right of the menu item.
Zoom In provides a closer view of the map. This decreases the miles per inch of the map scale shown on the Search Screen. To see street level detail the scale must be 1 inch equals 1/2 mile or less.
Zoom Out provides a more distant view of the map. This increases the miles per inch of the map scale shown on the Search Screen. When your scale is set greater than 1/2 mile to the inch you will only see major highways.
Local View really means that you see all street level information/detail and adjusts the map scale to 0.49 miles per inch. If the map scale is any higher only the major roads and highways are drawn.
Tip: You can also push the ToDo Hard Button on your Palm Organizer to see this view.
In this view you will only see major highways. County View zooms out to a high level view that displays all the map tiles loaded on your device. The currently active map is displayed with a heavier border than other tiles. Use Local View to return to viewing the active map.
Tip: You can also push the Memo Hard Button on your Palm Organizer to the this view.
Tip: You can quickly toggle between maps by jumping to County View and selecting another map.
Refresh View clears the screen of any temporary (unsaved) street names. TrailMarkers or SignPosts are still displayed.
Once you perform a SignPost Search you may wish to jump back to your target/destination or origin.
Once you perform a SignPost Search you may wish to jump back to your target/destination or origin.
The Markers Menu groups all of the features and functionality relative to SignPosts and TrailMarkers.
TrailMarkers allow you to manually trace routes between important destinations and name them for future reference. For example, you may want to mark the most convenient route from your hotel to a conference center.
To create a TrailMarker, select Begin TrailMarker from the Markers Menu. (You will see "Mark a Trail" in the InfoBar if activated.) Tap the beginning of your route on the map and drag the stylus along your route. Route recording pauses if the stylus is lifted from the screen, and resumes when the stylus touches the screen again.
After marking your route, select End TrailMarker from the Markers Menu. Give your route a name, select an icon to represent your marker and Save it to the SignPost Manager database.
SignPosts allow you to mark specific points of interest on your map. You must assign a SignPost Type from a list of 40 different SignPosts. By creating a SignPosts you may add significant amounts of information via the INFOBURST ...see below.
To create a SignPost, select New SignPost from the Markers Menu. (You will see "Plant a SignPost" in the InfoBar if activated). Tap the point on the map where you want to place a SignPost. The INFOBURST form automatically pops up. The following information may be entered:
By resting your stylus on the SignPost while in the map view, the INFOBURST pops up.
Tip: Zoom all the way in when you are positioning your new SignPost for better accuracy.
Small SignPosts are just that... small . They take up less memory and only include the name of the SignPost.
Manage or change your SignPost information with the SignPost Manager.
To display a SignPost or TrailMarker on the map, select the marker name in the listbox and tap Display. A plus sign (+ ) beside the SignPosts name indicates that it is currently displayed on the map by its (Icon). The (@) symbol indicates the SignPost will be displayed using it's Text name.
While in the SignPost Manager you may select a specific SignPost that you wish to edit. Tap Edit on the bottom of your screen to enter the INFOBURST form for that specific SignPost. Here you may wish to change the type or sub- type of a SignPost, as well as any other information included in the INFOBURST. You may also add information to the memo form for that SignPost.
This is the only way to delete a SignPost or TrailMarker. Highlight the one you want to delete and hit delete. There is no UNDO feature to this action so be careful!!!

The most powerful feature of StreetSigns 2.5 is SignPost Search. Now relative to your current location you can search for all of the SignPosts that you have for a given map.
From the Markers Menu select SignPost Search. You will notice in the InforBar if activated it says "Plant a Search Point". In short, the map is asking you where you are currently located. So tap on the map where you are located. If you don't know, perform an Intersection Search first to find your current location on the map. You will notice the "Search" screen pop-up.
The top right corner of the Search screen shows a "down arrow" with the word "All" next to it. This is where the different Types of SignPosts are located. Select it by either pulling down the drop down list or using graffiti, simply write in the letter of the Type you are looking for. For example write "a" for All then "a" again to view Airport and "a" again to view ATM.
If there is a "sub-type" it will pop up on the top left side of the Search screen. Select a sub-type when applicable.
To refine your SignPost search even further select under "Distance" the relative distance you would like StreetSigns to search. You may choose:
When you are done tap on "Go to Results".
The Search Results and Distance screen provide the results to your search criteria. You will notice the distance from your point of Origin to the SignPosts listed on the right side of your screen. The distance is calculated as the Crow Flys. Please note that any SignPost having a distance of greater than 99 miles will be presented as being 99 miles away.
At this point select the SignPost you wish to find and click on the point of the map that you wish to view first, your origin or your target/destination.
By clicking on the "Go to Marker" button you will instantly be back in the map view with the SignPost you were searching for right in the middle of your screen. Rest your pen on the name or icon for the SignPost and the INFOBURST will pop up.
By clicking on the "Go to Origin" button you will instantly be back in the map view with the point of origin you were searching from right in the middle of your screen.
With either result you will also notice the SignPost Pointer is there to guide you between your origin and target/destination.
If after selecting a SignPost from the SignPost Results & Distance screen, you determine that you made the wrong choice, you can simply choose the Search Results function to return to the results screen where you can select another SignPost.
Select this feature to remove all SignPosts and TrailMarkers from the map view.
On the Options Menu, Street Search displays the Main Search Screen where you can do another Street, Intersection or AddressBook Search, or select a different map.
When active, the InfoBar is displayed at the bottom left of your screen. When you first turn on the InfoBar it is says "tap street to see name".Tap a point on the map and the InfoBar displays the street address for that location. The InfoBar also displays other information when you use the TrailMarker and SignPost features.
The InfoBar may be turned off by tapping on it. The bar then turns black, indicating it is on the off position. Tap on it again and it turns clear and is back on.
The Search button toggles between the map and the Search Screen. It is displayed at the bottom right of your screen beside the InfoBar when the InfoBar is active.
The About StreetSigns option displays information about the specific version of StreetSigns.
