Shoot. zap zap - Aaargh! Thrust - zap - thrust, oh-no! Hyperspace. Eeek
- zap zap -phew! zap zap.
You know what its all about, but here's hoping you love the game as
much as I do!
Please make sure you read the information below about installing
the game.
If you enjoy Astroids, please take the time to enter a review
at EuroCool (http://www.eurocool.com/) or
PalmPilotGear HQ (http://www.palmpilotgear.com/).
Astroids is shareware, which means that you've downloaded it for free,
but if you enjoy the game and want to keep playing then we ask you to
register for it. It's now only $5, and you can find out how to
register online at the Astroids web page:
http://www.astraware.com/palm/astroids/
Register online now at PalmPilotGear H.Q.:
http://www2.viaweb.com/pilotgearsw/astrasoft.html
Registering removes the delay when running Astroids, and also unlocks
an 'Easter Egg' - an extra settings screen where you can get power-ups
like dual shots and fast autofire.
Astroids is available either as a standalone .prc file or as a
compressed ZIP (for PC) or SIT (for Mac) file. The compressed files
contain these release notes along with the .prc file.
The .prc file needs to be installed on your Palm or compatible handheld.
Firstly, locate and start up the 'Palm Installer' program. On Windows
this is in the 'Palm Desktop' menu in 'Programs' on the Start Menu.
Using the Palm Installer program, select the .prc file.
Put your handheld in its cradle (or use a HotSync cable) and press the
HotSync button. During the HotSync, the Astroids game will be transferred
to your handheld and will be available from the menu when you press
the applications button. Tap the Astroids icon, and you're in the game!
To start a game of Astroids, tap the screen. Unless you use the
Control Prefs to change them, here are the controls for playing:
(Datebook) | Left |
(Phonebook) | Right |
(To Do List) | Thrust |
(Memo pad) | Fire |
(Up) | Pause game |
(Down) | Hyperspace |
You get three lives to begin with. When you reach 5000 points
you get an extra life. You can only have a maximum of four 'spare' lives.
Version 1.1 : 17th June 1999 : Filesize 30549 bytes : Full Release Version
-
Fixed bug on high score screen which only displayed the last four digits
of your high score.
Version 1.02 : 15th June 1999 : Filesize 30531 bytes
-
Now stores high scores, and keeps a table of the best 5.
-
Pauses when the power is switched off.
-
Ability to submit your high score to the internet high score table!
-
Game records the REAL speed at which it was played - relative to the 'medium'
speed setting on my Palm III, so that all scores can be compared fairly
on the table.
-
Scores from aliens crashing into astroids now will not add to your score
after the game is over.
-
Removed registered 'easter egg' - the extra functions will be reintroduced
as powerups in the next planned major version.
Version 1.01 : 7th June 1999 : Filesize : 29188 bytes
-
Fixed a problem with people upgrading from a previous version - now clears
old preferences when you upgrade, so that changes between versions won't
cause problems on your palm.
Version 0.99: 30th May 1999 : Filesize
: 28437
- Corrected a registration problem - now works properly with temporary or
full registrations.
- Pressing Button '1' during pause, now exits the game. (as it used to do!)
Version 0.9b (Very minor updates): 29th May 1999 : Filesize : 27954
bytes
- Made the alien shot look slightly larger - for Visibility purposes (Pete)
- Changed the fragments slightly, so they don't splash out quite so far.
- Tweaked thrust settings (Dax)
Version 0.9a : 29th May 1999 : Filesize : 28885 bytes
- At Last!! The blasted transparent menu bug has been stopped. I even
know what caused it!
- Fixed the vanishing asteroids bug.
- Probably fixed the invincible alien bug. I've said this so often, this
is like crying wolf - as usual, let me know if it happens to you!
- Checked on scoring for asteroids and ships - you DO get points for ramming
an alien or asteroid. Probably not brainy, but you can do it.....
- Have reduced the lieklihood of being hit by an asteroid if you are
foolish enough to start a new level at the edge of the screen. Its still
possible, just a little less likely than before. (Pete)
Version 0.8a : 27th May 1999 : Filesize : 28685 bytes
- Fixed scores - Now gives correct scores (Tim)
- Changed scores to be stored by a long (i.e. more than 32000 is now possible!)
- Little alien shoots a little faster than the larger alien. (Tim)
- Removed 'exit game' option from the menu - was causing strange problems.
Will put back as button option later.
Version 0.7b : 25th May 1999 : Filesize : 26412 bytes ( and growing....)
- Added an 'Easter Egg' for registered users - to give rapid autofire
and shots from both wings if wanted!
- Registered users may start with 3/4/5 lives (Tim)
- Fixed a shot problem which meant it could shoot through things too close
- still some probs with shooting aliens.
- Added a preference page with option to make the shots slightly bolder,
if you wish. (Christopher)
- Changed the asteroid scoring - 25/50/100 - should make it a bit more
possible to get extra lives at 5000's.
Version 0.7a : later on 24th May 1999 : Filesize: 24511 bytes
- The Ship-Now! function has been changed. Wheras before it would
allow you to press fire to return (before a safe space arrived)
- now the hyperspace key forces you to reappear after you have lost a life.
It still won't let you come back to get instant revenge on an alien, though!
(Recommended by Tim)
- Added a 'paused' notification text on the screen when you are paused! (Tim)
- Now says Tap Screen/Press UP to start game.
Version 0.7 : 24th May 1999 : Filesize: 24359 bytes
- At last! Actually fixed the immortal alien bug - they were detecting (and
ignoring) themselves, instead of the asteroids!
Version 0.6 : 23rd May 1999 : Filesize: 24344 bytes
- Fixed shooting problem - now allows you to fire properly rapidly by repeatedly
pressing the shoot key.
- Improved responsiveness
Version 0.5a : 23rd May 1999 : Filesize: 24340 bytes
- Changed the ship stats again - made them rotate better
- Fixed the directional quantisation error - now you move in the direction
you shoot in.
- Changed how friction works - now easier to modify, and ships seems to travel
a bit more realistically.
Version 0.5 : 22nd May 1999 : Filesize: 24236 bytes
- Stopped ship from reappearing until alien has gone. (Dax)
- Made it possible to force reappearing even if not safe. (Dax/Tim)
- Ship destroy sound now played when shot by alien.(Dax)
- Made new level wait until any alien has gone (as in original) (Dax)
- Added Thrust sound (Thanks Dave) and updated many of the other sounds.
- Added a new graphic to the main screen. No increase in file size due to
decrease in text stored.

Around 30 people have emailed back feedback during testing (compliments and
complaints - both good to get!) Thanks go to you ! Your emails have helped
to keep the game going and progressing, as each 'great game' email makes
me do another hour of programming :-)
A few of the testers have really given very major assistance with
the development of the game - giving bug reports (with detailed information
of how to get the bug to happen!) serious suggestions for improvements,
and feedback on the overall game feel.
Main thanks goes to:
Tim - who has sent me more than 30 pages of feedback, bugs, suggestions
and cheerful comments!
Christopher, Pete, and Kevin - Who have each contributed
such considerable important feedback and have been awarded a registration
for the effort!
Also thanks go to the following - who have sent either cheerful feedback
or bug reports or other useful tidbits!
