Replacing Your Vapor Canister Filter

*EASY*

The vapor canister filter should be changed according to manufacturer's recommendations, which is typically every 12,000-24,000 miles. However, if you are driving in dusty conditions, change it more frequently. If your owner's manual does not recommend replacing the filter, do not change it.

To replace the filter, perform the following procedure:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground in a well-ventilated area with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). Raise the hood.
  2. Identify the vapor canister. It is usually located at one corner of the engine compartment, usually near the radiator, and will have a rubber hose leading to the engine.
  3. Disconnect the vapor canister rubber hoses and label them if necessary to avoid confusion.
  4. Loosen any clamps that secure the canister and pull it from the engine compartment bracket. Turn the canister upside down. Wear gloves to pull the old fiberglass filter from the bottom of the canister. Install a new one in the reverse manner.
  5. Place the canister in the bracket, tighten the clamp, and connect the rubber hoses to their appropriate ports. Close the hood.
